Nearshore Marine Management Meetings

Tue, March 29, 2005

I urge each of you to attend the closest meeting and tell ODFW to manage our nearshore environment with ecosystem-based management, and not species-specific or bodycount-style management. If agencies protect our nearshore reefs, points, and kelpbeds that we use for surfing areas, we will have to fight less in the future to preserve these places on a case-by-case basis. Please review the attached document for additional comments. Thanks, and I hope to see you there.

Six meetings set for the coming weeks will allow members of the public to help design Oregon’s strategy for managing nearshore marine resources.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Resources Program will host the meetings to help develop Oregon’s Nearshore Marine Resource Management Strategy. The strategy is a non-regulatory, comprehensive look at nearshore environments and resources, designed to prioritize species and habitats in need of management.

Marine Resources Program managers and biologists hope to draw on the expertise, experience and insight of people who work, play and have an interest in Oregon’s coast, from the high tide line out to three nautical miles. They hope to learn what Oregonians want from the sustainable use and enjoyment of the nearshore marine environment now and in the future.

“Developing a nearshore strategy will lay the groundwork for future management of Oregon’s nearshore marine resources,” said Patricia M. Burke, Marine Resources Program manager. “It will be an important part of a larger, comprehensive wildlife conservation strategy for Oregon.”

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Astoria, March 28, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Duncan Law Seafood Consumer Center, 2021 Marine Drive, Suite 200 Conference Room
