Paul Herzog

Ocean Friendly Gardens Program Coordinator

Paul Herzog

As Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Gardens Program Coordinator, Paul worked with chapter activists, landscape professionals, biologists and policy makers to help prevent urban runoff, the #1 source of ocean pollution reaching our ocean. Paul grew this program from just a seed, to a deeply rooted tree in all of the communities that he touched. He passionately educated supporters, providing them with tools to train and build a movement to plant Ocean Friendly Gardens.

Armed with a B.A. in Political Science from Cal State Northridge, Paul was an experienced community organizer for over 15 years, working on environmental and civic issues. He acquired a vast amount of his knowledge through hands-on experience working on several small organic farms. He had co-developed and led a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, working with Green Gardens Group where he was a G3 Certified Watershed Wise Landscape Professional and qualified trainer, as well as a member of G3’s Independent Oversight Committee for the EPA Watersense approved WWLP Certification.

During his 7 years at Surfrider, Paul was regarded as an inspiring advocate, accomplished public speaker, passionate educator, and a natural leader. Paul brought the sustainability message home in a fun, hands-on and do-able way. His legacy of passion, dedication and activism lives on through his amazing contributions toward making this world a better place. Wherever there is a Surfrider Ocean Friendly garden, there is a piece of Paul that will live on forever.
