I grew up surfing in the small menehune waves of Charleston, SC and gradually moved westward in search of better surf. After graduating from the University of South Carolina Honors College, I moved to LA, where I surfed Malibu regularly and learned about the Surfrider Foundation's work in the area. I went back to grad school for an MFA degree at American University and then moved to Honolulu and became an active member of the Oahu Chapter. I served on the Executive Committee for eight years, and with each victory I became more involved with Surfrider and more committed to its mission. As the first Regional Coordinator in Hawaii, I have working with the four chapters in the Islands to grow their membership and build on their campaigns for clean water, beach access and responsible coastal development. I have written two books on surfing and Hawaiian culture ("Eddie Would Go" and "Fierce Heart"), and I enjoy writing articles about the coastal environment and those eco-activists who are fighting to protect it. I'm a big proponent of our Rise Above Plastics Campaign because it's easy for each one of us to stop using single-use plastic bags and water bottles and create a wave of change across the country.
