Intros- new faces Lanny Shuler, Mark, Aaron, Linda,

Pete- Policy Update

- Special Places Campaign- Statewide planning for protected areas and marine reserves.
o OPAC- meeting in Pacific City attended by 5 Surfrider members
o Letter writing campaigns
o Partnered with OSU on how to address socioeconomics in coastal planning process. Final doc will be submitted to Gov’s office, makes recommendations on involving coastal communities and increasing fungi for the process.
o Partnered with Fisherman in Newport (??) and scientist to get consensus on reserves planning process.
o Stewardship area in Port Orford- Working with fishermen, scientists, conservationists on developing a stewardship program
- Lots of events going on
o Florence- Outreach related to marine reserves
o Pete interviewed on radio in Florence.
o Everyone should check out the events page to tie coastal trips in with Surfrider events.
- Law Clerk-
o Received 9 applications
o Stiv, Ian, Michael and Pete narrowed it down to 4 and will begin interviews.

Charlie- Field Update
- South Coast
o Formally joined with the Watershed Council (??), which has a Stormchaser program to test how storm/rainwater influence DEQ parameters.
 High school intern, Jared, is testing near short site. He has been working with us for 8 months, in the hope that some funding would be available. Patagonia application has been delayed, so what can we do to hook him up? Any good funding opportunities? Doesn’t have a board or wetsuit.
o Wave Energy- Many proposals floating under the radar.
 Organizing in Douglas County, will likely intervene. Currently doing outreach and education for members/activists.
o Florence Organizing Committee- Held 2nd meeting & working on getting 2 user fees removed:
 User fee at chicken point
 User fee at ocean beaches (will be addressed if chicken point intervention is successful).
 They are also working on marine reserves.
- Mid-Coast
o BWTF- They are testing up into watershed (Nye Creek).
o City has proposed 2 resolutions to increase water quality around Nye Creek:
 Remove homeless camps in area
 Planning and zoning amendments
o Saturday- Highway cleanup (north of Newport). Starts at 10:30 and ends when the highway is clean.
- North Coast
o Need BWTF volunteers to get supplies to lab.

Kristi- Treasurer’s Report
- We have $7,992 in the bank
o $3000 allocated to the legal aid
o $1200 allocated to BWTF
o $?? Allocated for fall event

Michael- Snowriders
- Upcoming events:
o Thursday at the Kennedy School- PowderWhores
o Oct 14th- Tour of Mt. Hood with Ranger Bill.
 We are working with Zig Zag district on a PSA type announcement that would be mandatory viewing for summer camps.
o Ski-Bowl- TeleTuesdays- 1st Tuesday of the month.

Charlie- Coastal Currents-
- Coastal Currents is a quarterly NW newsletter. It has been published in Seattle, and they are trying to spread the costs around. If we agree to shoulder some costs, it is about $230/issue. Would need to pay ~$450 upfront (for previous and upcoming issue).
- Charlie is going to get finalized costs and will post on hub so that executive council can vote.
- Michael wants to publish a web version (no costs, paperless), but Charlie is concerned we’ll lose readers.

Michael- Snowriders
- Need someone to take the lead on the Fall event. 2 possibilities:
o Surf movie night at small theatre
o Pint night with Kona and music

Lanny-
- Wants to make Surfrider events and message more successful by taking advantage of the new media available (You-tube, Myspace, etc). These represent untapped resource and would provide a way to increase our visibility. Most people don’t have a clue what we are doing.
o We could have businesses sell gift certificates and give a % to Surfrider. In exchange we could profile the “business of the month”
o Info right now is not well organized. Mike it more condensed and animated and the public will respond.
o Charlie believes effort should be statewide (a sign up sheet is passed around for people willing to give this ‘alternative media’ idea more thought).
o Mark (last name??) is Lanny’s website developer and would be willing to help us.
o Michael Halle’s friend owns a small film production company and is willing to do some for us.

Michael-
- Do we want the Oregon Chapter retreat? This will go on the Hub for a vote.

Opens
- October 20th, 7pm at Bullseye Coffee in West Linn- Benefit concert for Surf Aid International
- 1st Thursday Art Gallery-
o Huge success
o Art is still there
o Someone is needed to bring Surfrider materials to the gallery
Need someone to bottom-line Short Sands on November 3rd. Bring down bags and Surfrider lit and hand them out. Talk to Michael if interested.
