Pint Night Success and Kudos
The Surfrider Spring Pint Night at Satyricon on April 24 was a huge success. Almost 300 people turned out to see ASV Production's latest all Oregon surf film and the Verbtones play their tight surf tunes. Thanks to donations from Kona Brewing, Gorge Performance, Oregon Surf Shop, ASV Productions, Oregon Surf Page, Ocean Pulse Surf Shop, Oregon Blueprint, and Satyricon, we raised a good chunk of change for the Blue Water Task Force, Surfrider's water quality testing program. Fun was had by all and we thank all our sponsors and everyone who attended... If you couldn't be there and want to catch up on what you missed, check out ASV Production's on-line films at www.awesomesurfvideos.com, the Verbtones at www.theverbtones.iwarp.com and Kona Beer at a tavern near you... Thanks a ton for all your help!Tuesday, April 24, 2007
Da Vinci Middle School gets Water Quality Education

On April 11th, Surfrider Foundation Portland Chapter gave the students of Da Vinci Middle School in Portland the opportunity to dive into some hands-on water quality activities to better understand their inland impact on coastal watersheds and marine organisms. Students engineered marine organisms out of common craft materials and tested their buoyancy in controlled tanks. They were then able to test the effects of common pollutants on the buoyancy of their "engineered organisms". Many common pollutants such as detergents, pesticides, and oil affect marine plants and animals in unique and subtle ways not always so obvious as an oil spill. The students were able to understand how only the smallest amounts of these pollutants can affect the health and livelihood of important marine organisms that we as humans depend on. More importantly, the students learned how they can help keep such pollutants out of the ocean environment, even in inland cities like Portland. Portland Surfrider participates in many water quality activities from testing the Willamette, Clackamas and Columbia Rivers to marking storm drains in the around the city of Portland. To find out how you can be involved, contact our volunteer coordinator at noelles@hotmail.com.

Swap Meet at Gorge Performance
Thanks to Bob from Gorge Performance for letting us table at the annual Swap Meet on April 1st! Met a bunch of cool folks and drummed up some interest in Portland Chapter and Clean Water Classic. Matt, Pamela, Andi and Bob were all on hand for the festivities as well. Didn't get too many new members, although did buy some windsurf sails i hadn't planned on purchasing:) Lots of great swap deals so worth checking out next year if you haven't been before.
