If you are interested in working at the booth before movie showings please contact Dave at david.b.spencer@intel.com.
5. Water Quality Testing
Surfrider Foundation in Oregon has a water quality testing program which we have implemented and is currently in use, the state also has their program they are implementing. We are working on marrying the two. We have a DEQ certified lab in a coastal high school and we have been raising money for the test kits and up-keep of the lab. The school has agreed to sample additional South Coast sites: four in Coos Bay, three in Port Orford, one in Winchester Bay, and one in Gold Beach. We also have new test sites in Lincoln City.
As an update, all of the Lincoln City sites were clean last month, although tests were unfortunately taken before both L.C. and Newport had consecutive sewage spills. Our next Central Coast tests will be performed on August 15 (Friday). In addition, Mr. Tinker in Coos Bay gave us a gem of information regarding grant money already in schools which can potentially go towards testing. Markus will further inform those who are interested in contacting schools.
The Portland organizing committee is working on finding a testing lab on the Northern coast, and even in Hood River. Anyone who is interested in contacting schools in Newport or Hood River please let Markus know. He can be contacted at mmead@surfrider.org.
Some schools in need of contact regarding labs are:
What about private labs? We are contracting for the next three months with a private lab in Neskowin at a private junior high, but the cost is significantly higher per sample than to go through the public schools. If we can raise more funds, we will be able to use this option more often.
6. Patagonia/Ecotrust Movie Night
Patagonia has tentatively offered a large room in their Ecotrust building for a movie night fundraiser. Poor specimen just released Drive Thru Japan and we have permission use it for fundraisers. TO is another movie which South Coast has used as a fundraiser, and we may be able to use as well.
We need a committee to:
· Make a flier
· Follow up with patagonia
· Help advertise movie event around Portland. (put up fliers, potentially contact newspapers, radios…)
We are thinking an October/November show date.
7. Portland Executive Council Positions opening
We have two executive council members who will be vacating their positions at our next Portland organizing committee meeting. Our current chair, Markus Mead, has taken on the Surfrider position of Oregon’s Coastal Coordinator and is moving to the coast. Chris Bessmer, our current volunteer coordinator, has a number of other commitments which keep him from being able to attend to his volunteer coordinating duties as he would like. We very much appreciate the time, energy, and effort they have both given to Surfrider and wish them the best in their endeavors!
This leaves the chair position open, and Rob Williams who has been our vice chair for the past half year, has accepted the challenge to step into the position of chair. Pending an affirmative vote on this at our next meeting, his position of vice chair will be vacated.
A description of the open positions is listed below:
· Chair –Coordinate/manages operations. Receives mail and checks portlandsurfrider@hotmail.com account. Works in close conjunction with Oregon Field Coordinator. Conducts chapter meetings.
· Vice Chair –Supports Chair and Volunteer Coordinator.
· Membership/Volunteer Coordinator - Takes responsibility for contacting individuals following their first Surfrider meeting and get them to join as members, also takes charge of membership development events.
If you are interested in taking a more active role on our executive committee, please contact Markus at mmead@surfrider.org or Tina at Tiamotina@cs.com, or attend our next Portland organizing committee meeting.
In addition, if you are interested in taking on a less responsible role the we are looking for members to coordinate individual events and to coordinate introducing our education materials into local elementary and middle schools.
