Activities and Events

1)      Clean Water Classic

This weekend! Westport, Washington. People are making a surf movie. There will be two band and a surf movie Saturday night. There are still openings in many of the divisions for both long and shortboard heats.  The entry fee includes a Surfrider membership and contest t-shirt.

2)    Catch Basin Markings – John

Tuesday, May17th, 6:30pm. Meet here at the Ecotrust building and we will fan out from here.  If it has rained up 24 hours before or there is an expectation of rain within 24 hours after the event – the event will be postponed. Andi will email out about this event to the Oregon Surf page.  If you would like more information regarding this event or would like to participate, please contact John at JOHNT@BES.CI.PORTLAND.OR.US, or just show up.  If you can’t make it this time, this will be an ongoing event.

3)    Roadside Clean Up – Dave

Oregon Surfrider sponsors a section of Hwy 101 with the Oregon Hanggliders. The next one will be May 21st at 1pm. Meet at the Moolack Parking lot. There will be vests and bags available. It takes about an hour. The tides are perfect for morning and after clean up surfing. We need a minimum of seven volunteers so please let Dave know if you are interested in participating contact davidspencer99@msn.com, or just show up.  South on 101, north of Newport. Agate beach has a good sand bar for surfing right now!

4)    Mother Ocean Day review – Markus

Bassindorf Beach, Charlston, OR near Coos Bay. The South Coast volunteers did a great job of pulling off another exciting Mother Ocean Day event.  There was a grand booth, 25 bags of trash were collected, it was a rainy and nasty day – but folks were still stoked on the event. Next year the event will probably be moved to the weekend after the 4th of July. All of the folks who entered the sand castle contest won a prize and many of the sculptures were absolutely amazing… a wave, a sea lion, and even sponge bob squarepants.

5)    Pint night – Katie

Katie works at a local brewery and has connected us with Kona brewing company. There will be a fundraising event for our chapter at the Salvador Molly’s on the Eastside. It is in the old Sweetwaters location a block off of Belmont on Morrison. Glasses are being printed for our event. We can raffle t-shirts, show videos, pass out pamphlets, and there will be a pint deal at happy hour. We will sell the pint glasses to the bar and then they will give us a donation. They will need a paper receipt.  It will be a “buy a beer keep the glass” kind of deal. Kona has donated the glasses to us – Thank you Kona!!! The glasses should be ready in 2-4 weeks.  Ceia will take this project over when Katie moves, which is very soon. Thanks for making this happen Katie!  If you are interested in helping out with this event please contact Ceia at cieadavid@gmail.com or talk with her at the next meeting!

6)    Surfrider Positions – Markus

There will be two half time Surfrider positions here in Oregon. Markus Mead is in one of them and is responsible for the chapters and volunteers.  The newest one is the Policy Position. This position will represent Surfrider during the OPAC process. It will also work closely with Audubon, Fisher’s council to promote marine protected areas in Portland. The candidate must also have lobbying and legislative knowledge. Four candidates will be interviewed this week. The interviews will be held this Thursday and Friday.  Markus would love to have a chapter representative at as many of the interviews as possible. You don’t need to know anything about policy – it would be great to have one person at all of the interviews but that is not necessary. This way the chapter can have some input into the decision. The interviews will be held upstairs here in the room called “The Cave.” Dagmar (the receptionist) will be able to direct you to the appropriate room. If you would like to participate please contact Markus at 503/709-2912.

7)    Opens

·        Movie fundraiser – Markus

June – date TBA – Amateur surf, ski, skate - movie fundraiser with Hammer Surf in Seaside and/or Portland. Pamela will keep us posted on this event.
