Surfrider Foundations annual membership drive is from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We have a new executive council and lots of great volunteers showing up to meetings – so lets make this membership drive Oregon’s best! Some summer events where we could talk with people include farmer’s markets, outdoor festivals, etc? Pamela has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the rest of the chapter in our own membership drive contest. So get out there and start talking with neighbors, friends, family members and fellow surfers at the beach. Ashley will help to coordinate the event, if you would like to help her she can be reached at readmylips@ziplip.com. In addition our chapter membership contacts are Haley at haleymarie9@hotmail.com and Melissa at mgilbert@mesd.k12.or.us.
If your membership has expired or you are not yet a member you can go to National’s site at www.Surfrider.org and choose from lots of killer deals. You can sign up for your Surfrider membership and a variety of Surfing magazines, and get a free t-shirt or video. So go and check it out. Just make sure that you record that you are with the Portland, OR chapter at the bottom of the online subscription form.
16. Grant writing again - Markus
We need to write some grants in order to continue funding our coastal water quality testing. This is where the majority of the Oregon chapter money goes. We have organizations who are asking us to submit grants – which is a good sign for getting the money – they just need to get written!! You will have assistance and many folks working together on this will make the process easy! Please contact Markus at mmead@surfrider.org if you are available to help out with this very important task.
17. New Oregon Policy Person – Markus
A year ago Surfrider earned another 10k for policy work in Oregon. There were interviews in May 05 for this position. Currently Markus will be doing that position until we have a second run of interviews.

Joey Harrington, NFL Detroit Lions quarterback, announces the Third Annual Harrington Family Foundation Benefit Concert featuring Donavon Frakenreiter, very special guest stars John Popper and Chan Kinchla of Blues Traveler and Lava Records/Starbucks recording artist Antigone Rising.
For immediate release. Portland, OR (PRWEB) May 16, 2005, 2005 -- Following last year’s highly successful charity event, Joey Harrington, NFL Detroit Lions quarterback, has announced the Third Annual Harrington Family Foundation Benefit Concert. The event, featuring contemporary artist Donavon Frakenreiter, will be held on June 23, 2005. Doors open at 6:00pm.
This much anticipated show is set for the outdoor locale of Portland’s Rose Quarter Commons. Produced by Portland-based TAOW Productions, the rain or shine event will benefit Shriners Hospital for Children, Portland and the Harrington Family Foundation.
Headliner Donavon Frakenreiter has garnered an international reputation for his easy going, fun loving musical style. His newest release, on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records, is receiving national radio airplay and heavy MTV rotation. As a special treat, accomplished pianist Joey Harrington will join Blues Traveler’s John Popper and Chan Kinchla in a jam with the band. Opening will be Lava recording artist Antigone Rising, whose debut album “From the Ground Up” is in Starbucks stores now.
”This is a tremendous opportunity to play with some terrific artists, while also giving back to the community that has been so supportive of me and my family,” says Harrington, former Oregon Duck quarterback. “The success of last year’s event exceeded our projected revenue goals by raising over $30,000 for Shriners. For 2005, we have set our sights higher and we really need your support to help make this year’s event an even greater success!”
Sponsored by Fred Meyer, Starbucks Coffee Company, Widmer Brothers, KINK FM 102, blackfish creative, the Detroit Lions, McCormick and Schmick’s, Nike, Directors Mortgage, U of O Alumni Association, Nautilus and more local sponsors, 100% of all of the proceeds will go to benefit children’s charities.

Hey Everybody!
The Depoe Bay Surf Club is finally getting wet! We've had two meetings with the kids to talk about the Surf Club and get them fitted up for wetsuits and boots. At present we have six kids signed up for the club and might have more by Surf Day. Our plan is to cap the number at 12 members for the time being.
On Wednesday, June 22nd we're going to Otter Rock to go body boarding. The kids will first meet at our shop at 10:00 and get into their wetsuits. The plan is to get to the beach by 11:00 and body surf until 2:00.
We are hoping to have one adult to buddy up in the water with each one of the kids. If you'd like to help out and can be there on Wednesday, we'd love to have you come. Our plan is to take the kids out body boarding in June and then surfing in July and August.
You can reach either Mark or me at the shop at 765-2776 from 9-6 daily or e-mail me at this address if you think you can join us.
Thanks!

Oh great and powerful ocean,
I fear and respect your beauty.
I wish not to take away

I only wish to dance
with you for a short while.
