Updates

  1. 2006 Calendar and Coordinators-getting the calendar on website and need coordinators for the below events.
  2. Patagonia Grant: Markus: The grant was written for water quality testing on the west side (West Linn High School down to the coast in Lincoln City): through local school districts.  Patagonia chose not to fund our project, but our chapter found out that we have a full time grant writer on staff and we have a grant written now for the project and all we need to do is find a funder.
  3. Re-Cap of January events Slightly Stoopid and G. Love: Jocelyn- both events went really smoothly thanks to the help of all the volunteers and support staff.  We got about 30 interested people, so we’ll see what happens with that.  Both performers didn’t give us any airtime or anything, but it was fun to have a booth there and get the word out about the Surfrider Foundation.
  4. Treasurer’s Report: David: our finances stand currently at $3,324.21.  We got a $100.00 in donations this month.  So if you have any good ideas on how we can spend that money, or if you would like to make a donation contact David Blackmon at david@rosecitymtg.com.

Main Presentation

7.      Spring Beach Clean Up- March 25, Saturday What needs to be done, volunteers? Haley: SOLV is putting it on in Pacific City starting at 10AM.  The Surfrider Foundation will have a booth there and we need volunteers to be in the booth for 1 hour blocks of time.  David volunteered to help with the promotions and marketing.  If you do volunteer you have to sign a waiver (in case you get hurt picking up garbage), and it’s a fantastic opportunity to get Surfrider’s name out there (talk about what we do and why we do it), so wear logo clothing and help get the word out!  If we get enough volunteers and help we could possibly do a paddle out; everyone paddles out on their boards into the ocean.  How this event relates to water quality and influences policy (Markus)

8.      March event- Pint Night: Coordinator: Melissa Gilbert.  We set a date with the A&L (60th and Glisan) and pint night will be held April 11th from 7 till close (or whenever the party stops).   We’ll be able to show surf movies, have some drinks and get the word out about Surfrider.

9.      Buffalo Exchange “Surf Day” is off for Mother Earth Day, they chose another organization.

10.  Policy Update: Pete Stauffer:

NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY: PUBLIC MEETING PROCESS
This spring/ summer, a series of public meetings will be held throughout the state to address Gov Kulongoski's proposal to establish an Oregon Coast National Marine Sanctuary. These meetings will be organized by the Ocean Policy Advisory Council (OPAC) and will be designed to a) provide information the Governor's proposal; b) Gather input from the public and identify particular issues or concerns that should be addressed in the Sanctuary designation process. Surfrider is hoping to get strong representation from recreational ocean users (i.e. surfers, divers, kayakers, windsurfers, etc) to highlight issues such as water quality, public access, and ecosystem protection that may be addressed in the Sanctuary management plan. Surfrider Foundation is currently developing a position statement on our vision for a National Marine Sanctuary in Oregon. For more information or to provide input, contact Pete Stauffer

NEWPORT REJECTS SHIPBREAKING

On Jan 24th, the Port of Newport rejected a proposal by Bay Bridge Enterprises to establish a ship salvage facility on Yaquina Bay. The operation would have posed a significant threat to the ecological health of the bay, as well as recreational uses such as surfing, diving, and sport fishing. Surfrider members in Newport actively campaigned against the proposal through attending public meetings, writing letters, and submitting comments. On the day of the decision, members of Surfrider and Friends of Yaquina Bay met with U.S. Congresswoman Darlene Hooley for 30 minutes to discuss their concerns on this issue. Big thanks to Abby, Jean, and the rest of the Newport crew for their hard work!

11.  Respect the Beach: We need to get Surfrider’s watershed curriculum into schools: if you know of any teachers who would like to get some free materials please have them contact us right away so we can get our curriculum out into schools.

12.  Snowrider Project: Nothing new to report.

13.  Opens: Jason Wasserman brought up the idea of having a fundraiser with some local bands at the Fez Ballroom (316 SW 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97205, (503) 221-7262 ) downtown.  He set the date for May 18th with the bands; The Decliners, Creeping Meatball, Bad Goat, American Roulette, and 2 DJs.  He’s trying to get in touch with Mike from the Fez to pay for the room and then we can start doing promotions.  An inquiry was made about being able to raffle off a surfboard or some other swag (a snowboard would be sweet from the snowrider people), so if you have any contacts please get them to us.  Jason mentioned that non-profits also are allowed a certain number of alcohol permits.  He got members excited about leaning towards the pull of how big surfing is getting here in Oregon and how it’s such a good opportunity for awareness raising within that population.
