The Surfrider Foundation and Teva are excited to announce the return of “Rise Above Plastics Month” in October. The goal of the month is to educate people on the threats single-use plastics pose to our marine environments, and challenge them to reduce their plastic footprint by making simple changes in their daily lives.

On Aug. 2, dozens of vintage Volkswagen enthusiasts will hit the road for the nation’s longest, and longest running, annual Treffen (German for “gathering”) and cruise for a cause: clean water. Participants will be driving air-cooled, rear-engine Volkswagen models in the 15th annual Airhead Parts Hwy 1 Treffen Vintage VW Cruise and Car Show.

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION ISSUES STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF THE OFFSHORE ENERGY & JOBS ACT

The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the Offshore Energy and Jobs Act (HR 2231), which would dramatically expand offshore drilling in U.S. waters. The bill would require new drilling off Southern California, Virginia, South Carolina, and Alaska, and overall require a doubling of offshore domestic oil production. The Surfrider Foundation's Ocean Program Manager, Pete Stauffer, issued the following statement in reaction to the decision.

CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY RECOGNIZES INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY

In celebration of International Surfing Day, which took place on Thursday, June 20th, the Surfrider Foundation announced today that the California State Assembly passed House Resolution No. 19 with 49 co-authors to recognize International Surfing Day as a way to celebrate California’s surfing heritage and raise awareness about the need to protect our oceans, waves and beaches.

APPELLATE COURT UPHOLDS BEACH ACCESS IN DANA POINT

The Surfrider Foundation won an important victory today when the Honorable Terry O'Rourke and Cynthia Aaron concluded that the Coastal Commission has the authority for oversight of beach access at Strands Beach, which should put an end to the City’s bogus nuisance claims used to avoid beach access. Effectively, the decision means that if the City of Dana Point continues to fail to open the locked gates and expand the restrictive access hours for Strands Beach, the Coastal Commission can take an enforcement action.

REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD DENIES TCA PERMIT TO CONSTRUCT TOLL ROAD

Following two hearings filled with testimony that included comments from Surfrider Foundation, activists and ocean lovers alike, the Regional Water Quality Control Board denied the Transportation Corridor Agencies the necessary permit to build the first “segment” of the SR-241 toll road extension.

On Wednesday, June 19th the Regional Water Quality Control Board is expected to make a decision regarding the TCA’s permit to build the first “segment” of the SR-241 toll road extension. Surfrider Foundation is asking its supporters to attend the meeting at 1:00 PM to demonstrate opposition to the road. Public comment will be taken shortly after 1:00 PM.

SETTLEMENT PROTECTS SEA TURTLES, WHALES, OTHER RARE WILDLIFE FROM OIL-SPILL DISPERSANTS

A court settlement filed today requires the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure that toxic oil-dispersing chemicals used in federal waters off California will not harm sea turtles, whales and other endangered species or their habitats. Conservation groups sued to force the government to determine the dispersants’ safety for endangered species prior to their use — not afterward, as occurred during 2010’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

BLUE WATER TASK FORCE REPORT REVEALS TRENDS IN COASTAL WATER QUALITY

The world’s largest gathering dedicated to global wave protection with representatives from 19 organizations and ten different countries came together for the 3rd Global Wave Conference in Rosarito, Mexico. The three-day conference concluded with the signing of a conference statement on wave protection and coastal preservation that marked the unity of the world’s surf protection organizations.
