This August, Surfrider Foundation and Planet Green are partnering to bring viewers the second installment of Blue August, a month long programming event that will focus on the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, and waterways. Over the course of the month, various programs will not only entertain, but also educate viewers on the nature of our water and the vital need to protect it from harm—a timely message in light of the disaster unfolding in the Gulf.
Hosted by Philippe Cousteau, chief oceans correspondent for Planet Green, and his sister, leading water conservationist Alexandra Cousteau, Blue August will address the plethora of issues associated with the oil spill in the Gulf and water quality in general. These critical messages are consistent with and complimentary to Surfrider Foundation’s Clean Water Initiative, which focuses on protecting water quality in coastal watersheds and in the near-shore marine environment, and the Foundation’s “Not The Answer” campaign, which focuses on raising awareness about the negative environmental and economic impacts of offshore oil drilling.
Also airing during Blue August is Surfrider Foundation’s latest public service announcement featuring professional surfer Laird Hamilton speaking out on the dangers of offshore drilling and asking President Obama and Congress to reinstate the Presidential Moratorium against offshore drilling.
“We are thrilled to partner with Planet Green in bringing viewers such a critical and timely message about the health of our oceans,” said Alexis Henry, Surfrider Foundation’s Communication Manager. “Planet Green’s reach and influence are wide, and the more people we can educate and encourage to get involved, the better.”
In addition to programming on the oil spill, Blue August will feature the U.S. premiere of the six-part series “Oceans Blue” on Sunday, August 8, at 9 PM (ET). Other highlights include premiere episodes of “Coastwatch,” the U.S. television premieres of documentaries “One Water” and “Shark Water,” as well as the network premiere of the 2009 Academy Award® winner for Best Documentary, “The Cove.” For a complete list of programming, please visit www.planetgreen.com/blueaugust.
"Surfrider Foundation emerged from a simple human passion for what makes our ocean environments simultaneously, mighty and fragile," said Laura Michalchyshyn, GM of Planet Green. "Now more than ever, their 50,000 members in 90 chapters worldwide are a highly significant force in the protection of these waters," she continued. "We are honored to be partnering with them on Blue August."
