San Clemente, CA – September 10, 2015 – The Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our ocean, waves and beaches, will celebrate the special places it protects from threats and launch a national effort to ensure everyone’s coastal backyard is 100% protected with a fundraising event entitled Two Coasts: One Ocean featuring Portugal. The Man on September 19 at 6:30PM in Malibu, CA. The event will directly support and expand Surfrider’s unique blueprint – a volunteer chapter network supported through national resources and experts – to achieve greater coverage for protecting our coasts.
“Our story began in Malibu when a handful of surfers fought to protect their favorite surf spot, so it’s only natural for us to host our inaugural annual event here,” said Dr. Chad Nelsen, Surfrider CEO. "Malibu and Los Angeles are faced with coastal pollution challenges resulting from rapid growth, aging infrastructure and urban runoff. These are challenges that coastal communities across America are facing.”
Two Coasts: One Ocean will be presented by fashion designer Ted Baker and radio station KROQ with co-hosts surfer Laird Hamilton and athlete Gabrielle Reece, musicians Mike D and Perry Farrell, surfers Shaun Tomson, Rob Machado, Tom Curren, Alex Gray, Danny Fuller and Kassia Meador, shaper Chris Christenson, designer Heidi Merrick, creative director John Moore, swimwear designers Tori Praver and Kalani and Oleema Miller, writer Susan Casey and photographer Jaime Johnson, among others. Guests will enjoy music from DJ KK (big wave surfer Keala Kennelly) and fresh food from local purveyors with covetable auction items up for grabs.
“Ted Baker London is excited to partner with the Surfrider Foundation in an effort to protect the world's oceans,” said Craig Smith, Ted Baker’s UK Brand Communications Director. “Similar to Surfrider, Malibu is a place very close to Ted’s heart. Having spent years exploring the neighbouring beaches and enjoying the natural beauty that the city has to offer, we were drawn to Surfrider’s mission and what better timing to collaborate than during the opening month of Ted’s first store in Malibu.”
Providing guests with an intimate, coastal vibe, the event will be held at a private home with a live performance from rock band Portugal. The Man and tunes from DJ KK, fresh fare from local purveyors and an auction of highly sought-after items.
“The West LA/Malibu chapter continues to fight threats facing their 31-mile stretch of coastline,” said Dr. Chad Nelsen. “With the California plastic bag ban under peril and threats from oil drilling on the horizon, the local chapter really has their work cut out for them. Surfrider’s goal is to support our local chapter network in solving these challenges through education, direct action and lasting policy changes so that swimming and surfing in clean water is always the case.”
In addition to Ted Baker and KROQ, generous sponsorship is provided by Don Q Rum, Gucci, Rob and Sarah Wells, Jet Blue, The Ocean Foundation, Ana and Henry Pincus and Diana Heffernan and Steve Schrader. Space is limited. To purchase tickets and for more information about the event, visit www.surfrider.org/twocoasts-oneocean.
