Indialantic Elementary Quad Club Dune Planting

Project Description

Volunteers plant sea oats in Melbourne Beach: a sea-oat planting campaign stretching about 1,000 feet north from the Bonsteel Park dune crossover. All of the beachside elementary schools in South Brevard were invited – Gemini (Mel Bch), Ocean Breeze (Indian Harbour Beach), Surfside (Sat Bch), and Sea Park (north Sat Bch), and of course Indialantic. The first-, second- and third-graders dug holes with plastic trowels, scooped a clear gelatinous mixture into each hole to provide water, and planted sea-oat shoots roughly 18 inches apart.

About 65 volunteers planted sea oats along eroded stretches of the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge and beachside Brevard County on the weekend of Feb. 9. This event was done in connection with the Sebastian Inlet Chapter.
