Newport High School Oregon Beach Burning Signage Project

Newport students assist in signage that highlights issues with pallet burning on the beach.

Project Description

Oregon Parks and Recreation Deparment has agreed to put in additional signage at Nye Beach, Agate Beach, Bastendorff Beach and about 8 other sites on the Oregon coast to highlight beach issues with pallet burning. The chapter started pushing on this over a year ago, when Surfrider was on the advisory committee for Div. 21 rule changes for ocean shores. Including the rule changes to Division 21 that went into effect in February of this year (you can read new rules here, section 0120 is specific to fires -  http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/pages/rules/oars_700/oar_736/736_021.html). This is a great example of stewardship activities, youth engagement and lightweight advocacy leading to rule changes, and greater awareness.
