Versión española April 3, 2007 -- "An Inconvenient Truth" in Rincón by Steve Tamar The general meeting was held on April 3 at Pools Beach bar so we could view the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" on the big screen there. As could be ex- pected, there were some drawbacks to such a venue –ambient noise etc. – but it was appropriate to present such a large issue as global warming in oversized images. It was good to see peo- ple come from other towns for this viewing. Many thanks to Carol and Dennis Ritch for making this space available to us. The purpose of the film is to refute the federal government’s current insistence that global warming isn’t happening or, if it is, that it’s only a transient phe- nomenon. In this respect Mr. Gore does an excellent job of pre- senting the overwhelming evi- dence to the contrary in a very straightforward and understand- able manner and with a lot of hu- mor to keep the flow of argument entertaining. For that reason alone it’s well worth watching, more so if you’re not familiar with the issues or data discussed. I would highly recommend the film as an accessi- ble introduction to the major themes behind what is changing our climate. To conclude the film was a listing of virtually every other country in the world which has pledged to follow the Kyoto proto- cols in reducing emission of green- house gases. Even more significant was the listing of US State and local governments which have also pledged themselves to this same goal despite the federal stance (or lack of one). This is the major point I’m glad he made, the fact that on this issue at least, it is of no use waiting for Washington and that grass- roots level activity will lead the way for the States as a whole, and certainly for us here on the island. Our individual choices, actions and decisions of how we’re going to respond to a global problem are obviously going to carry more weight than any amount of political hot air that insists on adding to it. It was also very fitting to end the Surfrider Foundation meeting announcing the Earth Day 2008 revival meeting to be held on the 22nd of April. I certainly hope to present a posi- tive report on that activity for the next month’s issue of El Coquí of Rincón. -------------
English version above 3 de abril del 2007 -- "An Inconvenient Truth" en Rincón Por Steve Tamar La asamblea general se celebró el 3 de abril en el bar Pools Beach para permitirnos ver la película "An Inconve- nient Truth" en la pantalla grande que hay ahí. Como era de esperar, había algunas desventajas en tal lugar – el ruido del ambiente, etc. – pero era lo correcto presentar un tema de gran importancia como el calentamiento global con imágenes de gran tamaño. Nos dio satisfacción ver gente venir de otros pueblos para esta presentación. Les damos las gra- cias a Carol y Dennis Ritch por dejar- nos usar este espacio. El propósito de esta película era el de refutar la insistencia actual del go- bierno federal que el calentamiento global no se está dando o que de ser así, es solamente un fenómeno pasa- jero. En este respecto el Sr. Gore hace un trabajo excelente presentan- do la prueba contundente de lo con- trario en una forma directa y fácil de entender, con un sentido de humor para que a la vez la discusión del tema sea amena. Por esa razón nada más vale la pena ver la película, y más aun si no está familiarizado con esta cuestión o la data que se discute. Recomendaría muchísimo esta pelí- cula como una introducción a cosas de importancia que explican lo que causa el cambio en nuestro clima. La película terminó con un listado de todos los otros países del mundo que se han comprometido a seguir el protocolo de Kyoto para reducir la emisión de gases invernaderos. De aun más importancia era el listado de gobiernos en los Esta- dos Unidos estatales y locales que también se han comprome- tido a este objetivo no obstante la posición federal (o la falta de una). Este es un punto importante que me alegro él haya hecho, el hecho que al menos en cuanto a este tema, no vale la pena esperar a Washington y que actividades a nivel de las bases dará un ejemplo a todos los estados, y ciertamente a nosotros aquí en la isla. Lo que hagamos individualmente, nuestras opciones, acciones y decisiones de cómo vamos a responder a un problema global obviamente tendrán más peso que la palabrería de los políticos. La reunión de la Fundación Surfrider concluyó con el anuncio de una reunión para revivir El Día de la Tierra 2008 a celebrarse el 22 de abril. Espero presentar un informe positi- vo de esa actividad en El Coquí de Rincón del mes próximo.
