10 de abril de 2003 -- Surfrider Enfatiza la Necesidad de Planificación a Largo Plazo en Rincón

Rincón, PR - Durante un foro de la Junta de Planificación de Puerto Rico, Surfrider Rincón enfatizó la necesidad de la planificación a largo plazo. El evento, presidido por la Directora Ejecutiva Asistente Dra. Wanda Marrero, contó con presentaciones de varios municipios de la región, el alcalde de Rincón Carlos López, la Junta de Planificación, la Junta de Calidad Ambiental, la Liga Ecológica de Rincón, ciudadanos interesados y la Fundación Surfrider.

Surfrider proveyó un resumen de sus actividades en Rincón, dando especial atención al campaña Salva Tres Palmas. En particular, se presentó ante el foro un desglose de la estrategia de 3 pasos:

Parar los proyectos que amenazan a Tres Palmas
Buscar protección para los arrecifes mediante la designación de una Area Marítima Protegida.
Completar la protección de los arrecifes, mediante un enfoque en las areas adyacentes
Reducir los riesgos de la sedimentación
- Crear una Area de Planificación Especial
- Establecer un Parque Costero
- Surfrider demostró los lazos económicos entre la preservación de los recursos naturales de Rincón, el libre acceso a estos recursos y el desarrollo sostenible del turismo en el municipio. Finalmente, Surfrider abogó por la incorporación de estos aspectos en el Plan de Ordenamiento de la comunidad.

April 10, 2003 -- Surfrider Highlights Need for Long Term Planning In Rincón

Rincón, PR - Surfrider Rincón emphasized the need for long term planning during a forum hosted by the Puerto Rico Planning Board. The event, chaired by Assistant Executive Director Dr. Wanda Marrero, featured presentations by numerous municipalities from the region, Rincón's mayor Carlos López, the Planning Board, the Environmental Quality Board, Liga Ecológica de Rincón, concerned citizens and the Surfrider Foundation.

Surfrider provided an overview of its activities in Rincón with special emphasis given to the Salva Tres Palmas campaign. In particular, the 3 step strategy was outlined for the forum.

Stop the projects that threaten Tres Palmas
Seek protection for the reefs through the designation of a Marine Protected Area
Complete the protection of the reefs by focusing on the adjacent lands
- Reduce the risks of sedimentation
- Create a Special Planning Area
- Establish a Coastal Park

Surfrider further demonstrated the economic links between the preservation of Rincón's natural resources, the free access to those resources and the sustainable development of tourism in the municipality. Finally, Surfrider advocated the incorporation of these aspects into the community's Plan De Ordenamiento.
