Rincón, PR - La Sociedad de Historia Natural (SHN) de Puerto Rico participó junto a la Fundación Surfrider en una actividad dirigida a conocer los esfuerzos de la fundación, el Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales, el Programa de Colegio Sea Grant de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, el Municipio de Rincón, el sector turismo y los pescadores, en desarrollar una reserva marina en el área de Tres Palmas en Rincón, en el Barrio Ensenada.

Annette Blasini, miembro de Surfrider dio una charla sobre la reserva, su desarrollo y su importancia en San Juan a los miembros de la SHN. El domingo 28 de agosto de 2005, un grupo de la SHN visitó la reserva en el sector de la Playa Steps (La Escalera) y observaron el primer letrero que se instaló con la ayuda de Obras Públicas del Municipio de Rincón.

Allí también participaron de una breve charla por parte de Manuel Valdés Pizzini, coordinador de los esfuerzos del Plan de Manejo de la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas, y del Sr. Ruperto Chaparro, director del Programa de Colegio Sea Grant de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, y miembro del Comité Timón de la Reserva. Annette Blasini también participó de esta charla y llevó a parte del grupo, junto a Valdés Pizzini y Chaparro a hacer snorkeling por la reserva.

Los participantes de la SHN tuvieron la oportunidad de admirar el coral cuerno de alce (Acropora palmata), diversas escuelas de peces arrecifales, así como varias otras especies de corales duros.

Los visitantes tuvieron la oportunidad percibir la importancia de proteger este ecosistema que a su vez ofrece oportunidades recreativas y educativas a los visitantes. La visita de la SHN dio la oportunidad de intercambiar ideas, recoger recomendaciones y añadir a los miembros de la SHN en la lista de organizaciones contactadas que podrían ser aliados en la conservación y uso sustentable de estos recursos en ésta área. Sarah Bernier coordinó la actividad por parte de la SHN.

August 29, 2005 - Natural History Society Visits the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve

By Manuel Valdés Pizzini Rincón, PR - The Natural History Socieity (SHN by its Spanish initials) of Puerto Rico visited with Surfrider to learn about the joint efforts of Surfrider, the Department of Natural Resources, Sea Grant, the Municipality of Rincón, the tourism sector and local fishermen to create the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in Barrio Ensenada.

On Friday the 26th, Surfrider member Annette Blasini gave a presentation to the SHN in San Juan on the reserve, its importance, and the campaign to create it. On Sunday the 28th, the SHN group visitied the Reserve at Steps Beach and had an opportunity to view the first of five signs recently installed by Rincón's Public Works department (for details, please click here).

SHN members also enjoyed a brief chat by management plan coordinator Manuel Valdés Pizzini and comments by Sea Grant Director Ruperto Chaparro, who is serving on the Reserve's Steering Committee. After the talk, Annette Blasini, along with Chaparro and Valdés Pizzini, led the group on a snorkeling expedition.

The SHN participants had the opportunity to admire the elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata), a variety of fish and various other hard corals during the snorkel.

The participants also learned of the importance of protecting these valuable resources that provide recreational and educational opportunities. The SHN visit provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, hear suggestions and to add the many members of the Natural History Society to the list of organizations that are supporting the conservation and sustainable use of the resources of the area. The event was coordinated by SHN member Sarah Bernier.
