The GOAL:
Our goal is permanent protection against massive development
for the coastal area beginning at Little Malibu and going past
Domes by establishing a Natural Reserve.
These areas have been continuously threatened by developments
and will continue to be threatened if we don't create a permanent
solution.
Why save Rincón?
- The Northwest region of Puerto Rico is rich with precious
natural and recreational resources. The high quality of
the beaches are the economic "engine" for the tourist economy
of Rincón.
- The region boasts several world class surf spots, including
the Caribbean's best big wave - Tres Palmas. Rincón is the
capital of Puerto Rican surfing.
- The unique beach at Tres Palmas with coral reef just feet
from the sand offers great snorkeling and is a popular destination
when the surf is calm.
- The reef at Tres Palmas features the healthiest Elkhorn coral
in the region - Elkhorn coral is a candidate for the Endangered
Species Act.
- The waters off Rincón play host to the highest density
of Humpback Whales in Puerto Rico.
In addition, the region has one of the only whale watching
observation areas in Puerto Rico, where you can watch humpback
mating and calving rituals.
- The stretch of coast is home to many sea turtle nesting
areas.
- The beautiful and tranquil beaches are still accessible
via public access; in recent years several beaches in
Rincón have lost public access to development projects.
