June 1, 2005: 12th Annual Paddle to the Capitolio
- Calling Attention to Coastal Issues
San Juan, PR – Coastal enthusiasts gathered at "La Ocho" for
the 12th Annual Paleteo. The Paddle to the Capitolio
was organized to draw attention to coastal issues around
the island and to solicit greater support from the island's
politicians for public beach access and coastal protection.
Groups from around the island, including Asociación Internacional
de Mujeres Surfistas and Amigos del Mar, came to show
their support for our mother ocean. Organized by WaterKeeper
Riki DeSoto, participants like coastal heros Tito Kayak
and El "Doctor" paddled from la playa del Escambrón to
la playa San Juan Bautista in front of the Capitolio
building.
