| Versión española June 5, 2006 - Visual Art & Poetry Winners Set Sail on Katarina
Rincón, PR - Winners of the 1st "I Love Rincón" Visual Art & Poetry Contest were rewarded with a private sailing and snorkeling excursion aboard the 32' sailing catamaran "Katarina" www.sailrinconpuertorico.com. Under the guidance of Capt. Billy Bonbright and First Mate Tiffany Barry, who generously sponsored the excursion, the Manuel García Pérez High School students set sail in the southerly winds.
Once the vessel anchored in the sand, the students received a brief talk on the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve and instruction on water safety and snorkeling techniques. Shortly thereafter, the students took the plunge and set out snorkeling. The high-schoolers were provided with underwater cameras to record their experiences and perhaps to inspire new artwork. For some of the winners, it was their first snorkeling or sailing experience. After a long session in the water, the passengers enjoyed a deck-top lunch before Capt. Bonbright gave sailing instruction to the students. Some of the new sailors chose to "take the wheel" during the journey home. Others simply took in the sun and scenery. The contest and excursion were organized as part of Surfrider's ongoing education efforts in Rincón. ------------- |

English version above 5 de junio del 2006 - Ganadores de Dibujo y Poesía Velean en Katarina
Rincón, PR - Ganadores del Primer Certamen de Dibujo y Poesía "Yo Amo a Rincón" recibieron una excursión privada en el catamarán velero de 32' "Katarina" www.sailrinconpuertorico.com. Bajo el comando del Capitán Billy Bonbright y su co-piloto Tiffany Barry, quienes generosamente auspiciaron la excursión, los estudiantes de la escuela Manuel García Pérez salieron a toda vela con el viento del sur. En cuanto la embarcación fue anclada en la arena, los estudiantes recibieron una charla sobre la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas e instrucciones sobre seguridad en el agua y sobre técnicas para esnorkelear. Poco después, los ganadores se tiraron al agua y fueron a observar el fondo marino con el equipo de esnorkel. Los estudiantes de secundaria también recibieron cámaras acuáticas para documentar su experiencia y quizás para obtener nuevas inspiraciones artísticas. Para algunos, fue su primera experiencia de esnorkel. Después de una larga sesión en el agua, los pasajeros dizfrutaron de un almuerzo abordo antes de que el Capitán Bonbright diera instrucciones sobre navegación. Algunos de los "nuevos marineros" probaron tomar el timón de regreso a Rincón. Otros se solearon y dizfutaron del paisaje. El certamen y la excursión fueron organizados como parte de los esfuerzos educativos que conlleva la Fundación Surfrider en Rincón. |
