from Maritime Zone
Rincón, PR (November 14, 2005) -- DRNA agents and municipal public works employees removed the ten remaining benches that were inappropriately installed inside the maritime zone at Domes beach. Five of the fifteen benches had already been washed away by the sea. The benches were a part of a Department of Transportation Public Art Project and cost $110,000. Residents and DRNA staff members had been calling for the removal of the benches from the maritime zone because they were creating a public hazard and were potential traps for nesting sea turtles. The removal of the benches, facilitated by the continuous efforts of DRNA staffers Milagros Justiniano Rodriguez, Albert Vélez, and Nelson Ruiz, provides a positive example of government agencies removing structures improperly located in the maritime zone. "The community of Rincón would like to thank the DRNA and Municipality for taking action at Domes and we hope that the government will continue these efforts to protect our beaches even at the cost of removing dangerous structures from the maritime zone," said the Surfrider Foundation's Leon Richter. ------------- English version above 14 de noviembre 2005 -- BANCOS REMOVIDOS DE LA ZONA MARÍTIMO TERRESTRE
EN PLAYA DOMES
Rincón, PR (14 de noviembre, 2005) – Agentes del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y empleados del la oficina del obras públicas del Municipio de Rincón removieron los ultimos diez bancos que quedaban a dentro de la Zona Marítimo Terrestre en Playa Domes en Rincón. Cinco de los quince bancos que fueron instalados inapropiadamente fueron extraídos por la marea. Los bancos fueron parte del Proyecto del Arte Público de Puerto Rico del Departamento de Transportación por un costo de $110,000. Residentes y empleados del DRNA han hecho llamados para la remoción de los bancos en la ZMT porque estaban creando un peligro al público y eran trampas potenciales para los anidajes de las tortugas marinas. La remoción de los bancos, hecho posible por el esfuerzo continuo de Milagros Justiniano Rodriguez, Albert Vélez, y Nelson Ruiz del DRNA, provee una iniciativa positiva de las agencias del gobierno removiendo estructuras que están inapropiadamente localizadas dentro de la zona marítimo terrestre. "La comunidad de Rincón desea agradecer al DRNA y al Municipio de Rincón por tomar acción en la playa Domes y esperamos que el gobierno continúe con estos esfuerzos de proteger nuestras playas aunque sea al costo del remover estructuras peligrosas de la zona marítimo terrestre," dijo Leon Richter de la Fundación Surfrider.
