November 15, 2002 -- Surfrider Foundation Receives the
Order of the Jutía Award
Jayuya, PR -- The Surfrider Foundation received the Order
of the Jutía Award at the 33rd Annual National Indigenous
Festival of Jayuya. Recently created, the award is given
to groups or individuals who have helped to raise environmental
consciousness on the island and who have helped to protect
Puerto Rico's natural resources. The prize is named after
the Jutía, an extinct species similar to a guinea pig that
was a major source of nutrition to Puerto Rico's indigenous
people, the Taino Indians. Surfrider was recognized for
its past and ongoing efforts throughout Puerto Rico.
