November 6, 2002 -- Bill Introduced to Establish Tres Palmas
Marine Reserve
San Juan, PR: Surfrider Rincón, Surfrider San Juan and Surfrider National joined
Puerto Rico's Speaker of the House Carlos Vizcarrondo and Rincón Mayor Carlos
Lopez to publicly announce Proyecto de la Cšmara 2983 the law to establish The
Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. A press conference was held in the Speaker's office
to announce and explain the bill that would afford permanent protection to Rincón's
treasured natural and recreational resources. The proposed Tres Palmas Marine
Reserve would save one of Puerto Rico's and the Caribbean's healthiest elkhorn
coral colonies, turtle nesting areas and whale breeding zones. In addition, the
Marine Reserve would include numerous world class surf breaks including the Caribbean's
famous big wave treasure Tres Palmas. The bill is currently sitting with the Natural
Resources Committee which will soon hold public hearings on the measure before
the bill is brought to the floor for a vote.
