Versión española October 15, 2006 - The Board Loves Rincón By Dr. Bill Rosenblatt – Chairman of the National Board of Directors Rincón, the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, and most importantly, the Rincoeños who have worked so hard on so many fronts are truly amazing! That was the conclusion members of Surfrider's Board of Directors, who came from as far away as California and Alaska, reached after spending 3 days in Rincón in October. Most who had never before visited Puerto Rico were overwhelmed! The Board met with local students and teachers before beginning a walk from Parking Lots to Tres Palmas. Board members got to see firsthand both the beauty of Rincón and the many challenges it faces. Few could believe, despite all the work, court rulings, and decisions that Sandy Beach Apartments were nearly finished. How could that be, some asked? How could the developers be so bold, so insensitive, so stupid? As the board walked the Domes trail, picking up trash all along the way, they saw the natural beauty that is Rincón and that needs to be protected. As they stood at the lighthouse many couldn't believe that whales would be seen so close in a few months. As they snorkeled the reefs throughout the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, they were taken by the beauty of the giant elkhorn coral. They understood how important a victory you have won. An evening boat ride from the marina to the lighthouse and south to Barrero gave the board yet another view. They saw the poorly planned development, the shrinking beaches, the seawalls and all the challenges they present for the future. All the formal board meetings were held outside at the Hacienda Ensenada. Thanks to Leon's knowledge of Rincón all the local specialties were part of the fare. Who can resist Pollo al Carbón or guavalitos or an egg ham and cheese sandwich on local bread from Puntas Bakery or a dinner at the Pool Bar? A highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night BBQ at Villa Tres Palms - a full on Puerto Rican party where board members got to meet Surfrider members, supporters, and partners, and the activists who have helped make everything possible. Who knew that some of the board members were such dancers? Thanks to Annette and Los Tambores de Felix Alduen’s bomba and plena group everyone got a taste of real native music and danced until they were drenched in sweat. The Rincón meeting set a new standard for board meetings. Seeing and experiencing Rincon, the work that you've accomplished, and the challenges you face was for many a life changing event. I've been coming to Rincón for 20 years. I love Rincón and was especially proud to have my fellow board members see what I have seen, get to know what I have known, and be privileged to meet the people I have met. As the bumper sticker says "I love Rincon"! As I said when I spoke to you Saturday night "Gracias, keep up the great work because after all it's your Beach, your Rincón!" -------------		The Board of Directors begins the adventure. English version above 15 de octubre del 2006 -- ¡La Junta Ama a Rincón! Por Dr. Bill Rosenblatt – Presidente de la Junta Nacional de Directores Rincón, la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas, y sobre todo, los Rincoeños, quienes han trabajado tanto y en tantas batallas, son realmente ¡increíbles! Esa fue la conclusión que sacaron los miembros de la Junta de Directores de la Fundación Surfrider, los cuales vinieron desde tan lejos como California y Alaska, después de pasar tres días en Rincón en Octubre. La mayoría de los miembros no habían visitado nunca Puerto Rico y se quedaron impresionados. La Junta se reunió con estudiantes y profesores del area antes de comenzar una caminata desde playa “Antonio’s” hasta la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas. Los miembros de la Junta pudieron ver de primera instancia tanto la belleza de Rincón como los muchos desafíos con que se enfrentan. No pudieron creer, que a pesar de todo el trabajo, los juicios, las sentencias etc., que los Sandy Beach Apartments están casi terminados. ¿Cómo puede ser?, se preguntaron. ¿Cómo podrían, los constructores, ser tan atrevidos, tan insensibles, tan estúpidos? Mientras la junta paseaba por el camino “Domes”, (recogiendo basura todo el tiempo), vieron la belleza natural de Rincón y la necesidad de protegerla. Mientras observaban desde el faro, a muchos les costaba creer que en pocos meses se podría ver tan de cerca a las ballenas. Haciendo snorkeling por los arrecifes de la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas, fueron cautivados por la belleza del coralino cuerno de alce gigante. Comprendieron entonces la importancia de la victoria que ustedes han conseguido. Un paseo nocturno en barco desde la marina hasta el faro y al sur hacia Barrero dio aún otra vista a la Junta. Vieron todo lo construido, la mala planificación, las playas menguándose, las murallas marinas, más todos los retos futuros que se les presentan. Todas las reuniones formales de la junta fueron celebradas alaire libre en la Hacienda Ensenada. Gracias a los conocimientos de León sobre Rincón, pudieron incluir en el menú todas las especialidades del área. ¿Quién puede resistirse al Pollo al Carbón o a los Guavalitos o un sándwich de huevo, jamón y queso en pan criollo de Puntas Bakery o a una cena en el Pool Bar? Uno de los momentos más emocionantes del fin de semana fue el BBQ del sábado por la noche en Villa Tres Palmas. Una fiesta puertorriqueña donde los miembros de la junta pudieron conocer a los miembros de Surfrider, a los que les han apoyado, a sus parejas y a los activistas quienes han ayudado a hacerlo todo posible. ¿Quién hubiera dicho que algunos miembros de la junta bailaban tan bien? Gracias a Annette y a Los Tambores de Felix Alduen con su bomba y plena, todos tuvimos una muestra de la auténtica música nativa y bailamos hasta empaparnos de sudor. La reunión de Rincón sentó un nuevo precedente para las reuniones de la junta. El ver y sentir Rincón, la labor que ustedes han llevado a cabo, y los desafíos a los cuales aún les quedan por enfrentarse, fue para muchos, algo que les ha cambiado la vida. Llevo 20 años visitando Rincón. Amo a Rincón y me sentí especialmente orgulloso de que mis compañeros de la junta pudieron ver lo que yo he visto, conocer lo que yo he conocido, y tener el privilegio de conocer a la gente que yo he conocido. Como dice la pegatina para el carro, “¡Yo amo rincón!” Como ya les dije el sábado por la noche cuando les hablé, “Gracias, sigan trabajando tan bien porque al fin al cabo es ¡su playa y su Rincón!”		The Board of Directors begins the adventure.
