September 28, 2002: LA SIEMBRA TAN
BUENA
Rincón,
PR - Less
than a year after the coastline in front of Rincón's
Indicators and Marias was bulldozed to create beachfront parking
for the Quicksilver Caribbean Cup and after months of planning,
over 80 volunteers joined together to "reforest"
the denuded area.
Surfrider
volunteers and students from three high-schools, two in Rincón
and one in Guaynabo, came together on the morning of Saturday,
September 28 to plant trees in the bulldozed area. The "siembra"
was planned and coordinated by Rincón resident and
Surfrider member Armando Asencio. According to Surfrider member
Annette Blasini, "The participation was so overwhelming
that we could not even count the number of trees planted in
the energetic chaos of the morning." One observer estimated
that nearly 200 native trees were planted on Saturday.
The
reforestation was the result of months of coordination between
Surfrider and the municipality of Rincón. While Surfrider
volunteers planned and planted, Mayor Carlos Lopez has promised
that the Municipality of Rincón will help to maintain
the area and to water the young trees.
