BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Group show featuring vintage surf photographs
and unique artist designed surfboards. Titled Ebb/Flow,
at the East/West Gallery, the show contains a wide-range of
imagery characterizing the development of surf-culture over the past eighty
years. As part of the “Art for Activism” series,
10% of all profits from the exhibition will be donated to the Surfrider
Foundation. Additionally, Friday we will be auctioning off a
print signed by photographer Dan Merkel and professional surfer Shaun Thompson;
and Saturday we will be auctioning a print signed by photographer Art Brewer
and professional surfer Tom Curran. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will
be donated to the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
Surf culture is an undeniable part of living in Southern California. Surfing
has developed into a profession, a favorite pastime, a lifestyle, and finally,
an art form.
The summer show at East/West Gallery, which opens June 15 and runs through
July, encompasses the visual and conceptual aspects of surfing through a series
of photographs that range from the early 1930s to present day. In capturing
the essence of surf culture the show draws attention to the notion that artwork
centered on surfing has blossomed into a distinguished and credible art form.
The group exhibition FLOW -- Fine Lines On Water evolved out of an idea that
curator and artist Dianna Cohen had in 2005 to invite a group of fine artists
to produce original (and functional) works of art specifically imagined
to become surfboards. These exquisite and unique pieces were created
in conjunction with California Surfboard maker HOBIE, and represent emerging
local talents.
