Surfrider Foundation Santa Barbara Chapter is excited
to two guest speakers at our next general interest meeting Wednesday,
June 4 at 7:00 PM at the offices of Home Planet Productions,
735 State Street (The Balboa Building). Local surf photographer
Branden Aroyan, will present slides from recent travels from
home to Hawaii, Local footage of Kelly Slater and tropical perspectives
of Joel Tudor getting pitted at pipe. Jonah Busch, Ph.D. candidate
in economics and environmental science at UCSB will present his
research on “Do
surfers respond to water quality risk?”
Branden Aroyan's photography is a rare combination of technical
mastery, style and a thorough understanding of the ocean. His images put the
viewer in the middle of the action. They show surfing and the ocean from a
perspective normally reserved for surfers - inside the tube, on the shoulder
of a wave, or standing on the beach waiting to paddle out. Whether documenting
expeditions for Patagonia in Chile, traveling for surf magazines in the South
Pacific, or shooting at home in Santa Barbara, Branden has maintained surfing
as a passion and balanced his life accordingly.
Branden's travel destinations have included France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico,
El Salvador, Costa Rica, Hawaiian Islands, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Western
Samoa, The Philippines and Tahiti. Internationally his work is published in The
Surfer's Journal, Surfer Magazine, Surfing, Longboard, ASL Australian Surfing
Life and Surf Sessions. As well as slide show viewings for the Sierra Club and
The Surfrider Foundation. Branden is a Brooks Institute of Photography Alumni
of 1997 and his clients include Nissan, Billabong, Hurley International, Patagoina,
Channel Islands, Heal the Ocean, Yater Surfboards and many others. His works

“Do surfers respond to water quality risk?” Surfing in coastal
water polluted by urban runoff can cause gastrointestinal illness, respiratory
illness, and ear and throat infection. Unhealthy water caused local public
health agencies to issue over 25,000 beach closure or advisory days across the
United States in 2006. At the same time, public health agencies in Southern California
advise against surfing within 72 hours after a heavy rain. But how effective
are these advisories in keeping surfers away from the waves they love? This analysis
compares multi-daily counts of surfers and beachgoers at Sands Beach from 2003-2008
with meteorological conditions and the UCSB academic calendar to determine surfer
and beachgoer responsiveness to beach advisories and to recent rainfall. Learn
what public health agencies can do to improve the beach advisory
system, and find out what day of the week has the emptiest waves!
