CHAPTER
BENEFIT:
MAKANA @SOhO
Don’t miss our Santa Barbara Chapter benefit
featuring world renowned slack key guitar artist MAKANA from
Hawai’i in concert Tuesday, January 30, at 7:30 PM at SOhO
Restaurant and Music Club.
Makana was born and raised on the isle of O'ahu in Hawai'i. He
began singing at age 7 in the Honolulu Boy Choir. He picked up the 'ukulele at age 9,
and at age 11 began his journey with the indigenous traditional Hawaiian guitar
style which pre dates blues known as "Ki Ho'alu", or
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
Makana shows some of the best in slack key and world-class guitar
playing. His singing, in multiple languages, is as unique and
versatile as his guitar and a perfect compliment to the many
styles, while carrying forward the spirit of Hawai’i. Performing as a solo act, Makana has stunned live audiences with
his musical brilliance and Hawaiian wall of sound. Makana, who’s name means “gift”,
is truly a rising international music star and Hawaii’s
gift to the world.
He has toured England, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, Tahiti,
Bali, and throughout the US, opened for Sting, Santana, Elvis
Costello, No Doubt, and U2, just to name a few. He performs both solo and with a band, a fusion of Hawaiian,
World music, and Modern contemporary original rock. His music has been featured
in both major motion pictures and independent films, as well as innumerable environmental
and educational documentaries. Makana started his own artist
label in 2002 and enjoys the freedom of creative independence
and the ability to share his music with a multitude of fans as
well as non-profits, educational institutions, environmental
and social organizations, and communities worldwide.
“Slack key guitar music, indigenous to Hawai’i, has been around longer
than the blues, and Makana is considered one of the greatest living players.” -Esquire
