CHAPTER GENERAL INTEREST MEETING

Thursday August 3, 2006
Watershed Resource Center
Arroyo Burro County Beach Park

Special Guest: Mike Mcginnis and Matt Scott

Surfrider Foundation Santa Barbara Chapter is excited to host guest speakers, Mike Mcginnis and Matt Scott, at our Chapter General Meeting August 3 at 7:00 PM at the Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro County Park. They will give a presentation on the Naples coast and marine ecosystems, and the development alternatives that are proposed.  The presentation will include footage on a documentary currently under production, covering this issue.

With plans recently submitted to develop 54 mega mansions just west of Goleta, our meeting will focus on this major development and what the future holds for development on our coast. There are limited opportunities for the pubic to weigh in on the development, specifically at Naples, and our meeting will help prepare a comment leter to decision makers on the project and/or deliver public testimony.

Michael McGinnis has surfed for over 30 years, and received his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1993. He is currently Acting Director of the UCSB’s Ocean and Coastal Policy Center, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in policy, politics and ethics. He is editor of Bioregionalism (Routledge 1999) and has published over 60 essays & government reports that focus on ecosystem management and coastal marine policy. He serves as advisor to several government and non-government organizations, including the Naples Coalition.  His new webpage on the region can be found at: http://www.bioregionalism.org/index.htm

Matt Scott graduated from UCSB in Aquatic Biology and has recently contributed to various surf films, shot in locations around the world. He is currently working on a documentary film that highlights the debate surrounding development on the Gaviota Coast, specifically at the Naples Township.  The documentary is an interview intensive piece, collecting voices on both sides of the argument, and all in between.

Our general meetings are a place to hear from remarkable speakers on interesting or hot topics in a comfortable setting. Please join us to find out what other issues and challenges face our coast and ocean and what Surfrider is doing to help. Meet like-minded individuals, contribute to the discussion, or just listen and learn. Refreshments provided.
