OUT THERE

Lobero Theater
AFTERPARTY hosted by New Belgium Brewing Company and Pink Vodka
LIVE Special Guest TBA
Teton Gravity Research (TGR) presents OUT THERE, a 16mm and
HiDef surf film, on Wednesday, May 28 at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre. Created in partnership
with Surfrider Foundation, and sponsored by Jeep and SoBe Life Water, OUT THERE
showcases today’s most progressive surfing, while considering humankind’s
impact on the world’s oceans, beaches and waves. All proceeds from the
Santa Barbara premiere of OUT THERE benefit SB Surfrider’s efforts to
protect coastal environments.
Through the experiences of surfers and the locals they meet throughout their
travel, the film takes a thought-provoking look into the environmental
destruction threatening known and unknown surf spots. OUT THERE questions impending
threats to Trestles in Southern California, pulp mill pollution in Southern Chile
and unrestricted development along Hawaii’s famed North Shore and in Tahiti. Additional
footage was shot in El Salvador, California, The Galopagos Islands.
“We wanted to do something that no one has ever done before,” says
TGR Co-Founder, Steve Jones. “Our goal is to produce a film that not only
captures the youth culture and progression taking place within surfing, but also
harnesses that energy to inspire surfers and enthusiasts to take action toward
protecting endangered, coastal areas around the world.”
OUT THERE features the surfing of John John Florence, Jamie Sterling, Pancho
Sullivan, Jordy Smith, Jamie O’Brien, Nate Yeomans, Brett Simpson, Greg
Long, Garrett McNamara, Herbie Fletcher, Torrey Meister, Sterling Spencer and
Donavan Frankenreiter, along with the Billabong XXL winning session Shane Dorian,
Ian Walsh and Manoa Drollet surfed during what may be the largest waves ever
ridden at Tahiti’s famed break, Teahupoo.
There will be free giveaways, a signed Garrett McNamara and Keali’i Mamala
SoBe surfboard raffle, and a silent auction for a Sonos Digital Music System!
A very special live auction will take place benefiting South Coast surfboard
shaper Wayne Rich who was seriously injured at Rincon in December. Rich
is facing $75,000 in medical bills and related expenses. Additional donations
are still being sought for the auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to a
fund set up in his name. The Ventura Surf Club is also planning a fundraising
event in that town on June 7.
In addition to the auction, SB Surfrider is generously donating a portion of
the net proceeds from the film admissions to Rich.
A VIP afterparty featuring a live band will take place in the Lobero courtyard
behind the theatre for guests 21 and over. Admission is separate.
