  2. You will need some sturdy paper on which to print out the stencil. Manila folders work really well. Simply grab a legal size folder and cut it down the middle.

  3. Place the folder section in the manual feed tray on your printer. Make sure you change the print size to 11” x 14”. You are now ready to print.

  4. Take the printed piece and using an Exacto knife, carefully cut out the black sections. Pay special attention to the letters “A” and the second “T”, as they are floating – meaning that they are attached to the stencil by thin slivers of paper.

  5. Once you are finished, you are ready to stencil.

The two best mediums for stenciling are spray paint and chalk. Both are relatively quick and easy to apply, it’s just a matter of how permanent you would like your stencil to be.

For chalk stencils – You will need some sidewalk chalk, which can be found at most arts & crafts or toy store, some spray on adhesive (available at any hardware store), and a paint roller and tray. Pulverize the chalk into a powder. Note that the finer you make the powder, the better your stencil will turn out. Find a flat surface, where you would like to apply your stencil – e.g. a sidewalk or wall** Using a can of clear adhesive, spray the area to be stenciled. This will not only help hold your stencil in place, but will better allow the powdered chalk to adhere to your surface as well. Load up the roller with chalk and carefully apply over the stencil area. Be careful rolling over the thin parts of your stencil – always try to roll with them, not against them. You don’t want to bend them and ruin your stencil. Blow away the excess chalk, lift up your stencil and voila – you’re done!

For spray painted stencils – You will need some spray paint. Spray on adhesive is helpful, but not necessary. Find yourself a flat, clean area to paint. If using adhesive, spray it over the surface to be stenciled. Place your stencil over the area, making sure it’s as flat as possible. Holding the can approximately 12-16 inches away, spray the area to be stenciled. Carefully lift the stencil up and presto – you’re done!
