CAPE CANAVERAL – Activists from the Surfrider Foundation Sebastian Inlet Chapter and beach-goers of all ages will take to the ocean Sept. 23 in their annual Paddle for Clean Water at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral.

Participants will use surfboards and kayaks to paddle out in the ocean to raise awareness and support for improving coastal water quality. Surfrider Foundation members will paddle in support of the Clean Oceans Act. The proposed legislation aims to stop gambling boats from dumping partially treated sewage into the ocean.

“While we commend Sterling Casino Lines on the steps it is taking to self-contain their sewage with a custom waste-treatment system, the fact remains that other gambling ships like Sun Cruz Casinos dump thousands of gallons of partially treated sewage directly into the ocean on a daily basis,” said Rick Hayes, Sebastian Inlet Chapter Chairman. “The environmental impact is extreme, to say the least. Waste washes to shore, leaving the ocean an unsafe place for surfers, their families, and tourists to spend their time.“

All community members and area visitors are invited to attend the free event, which begins at 10am. Attendees can watch from the beach or jetty, paddle out on a surfboard, or even board an ocean kayak courtesy of Space Coast Kayakingand Cocoa Beach Kayaking. The event also features a beach cleanup, food and drinks, and speakers.

Jetty Park is located at 400 Jetty Road in Cape Canaveral. The park’s standard $5.00 entrance fee applies.
