Surfrider Local Happenings in April
Sebastian Inlet chapter members from Vero to Titusville helped out at the Ron Jons Easter Fest all three days, doing beach cleanups each day at the pier and giving out prizes to participants. The chapter chairman Rick Hayes visited with representatives of the Brevard Natural Resource Management Office to discuss the Midreach dune replenishing projects. Also, Greg Gordon and Craig Bell gave a presentation for the Satellite Beach Marine Adventure Club, showing the Surfrider educational video, Sea to Summit, and bringing in sand from all parts of Brevard County to let the kids view through a magnifying glass. The kids could then see the difference in how big, round, and smooth the sand grains were. During the same week the new Surfrider State Coordinator, Ericka Davanzo, visited Tallahassee to support the Clean Oceans Act that prohibiting sewage dumping off gambling boats. Ultimately the bill died in committee, but both sponsoring representatives promised to take up the bill for the next session. Finally, the 11 local chapters from around Florida met on the 28th of April to discuss strategies for the summer months, meet with staff from the National Office, and learned how to increase volunteer participation.
