Clean your Beach and Feel the Positive Vibrations!

Siuslaw Chapter and Florence citizens, its time to get your cleanup groove on! Your beach doesn't clean itself, so show a little respect and have a little fun with the Siuslaw chapter volunteers at the South Jetty, starting at Parking lot #1, this Saturday, March 28th from 10:00am-1:00pm. SOLV's specatacular statewide beach cleanup event only happens twice a year, so carpe diem my beach loving friends and get involved! Additionally, Newport and Portland Chapters are taking the lead on zones 2 and 7 for event happening up and down the entire Oregon Coast! Additionally zone captain chapters are helping sponsor the event giving away 500 reusable bags for volunteers participating in Surfrider captained beach cleanup zones. Other chapters and Surfrider members are pitching in by captaining 8 different beaches from Clatsop to Curry Counties! Come out and pitch in to help keep Oregon's beaches the cleanest! www.solv.org/programs/beach_cleanup_zone.asp

Water testing is underway
The Siuslaw Chapter has started collecting water samples for testing at the South jetty, North jetty, the Siuslaw river and, the Heceta beach drainage near Driftwood shores. Larry Brammer designed and built the device that attaches to a fishing pole to hold the water sample bottles when collecting water from the ocean, good job Larry. We have the samples tested at the Siuslaw Watershed Council Lab in Mapleton. This all takes place the 3rd tuesday of every month, and soon we'll be posting the results.

Adopt a Hwy, Siuslaw Chapter Surfrider Foundation signs are up.
March 13th 2009, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) installed our Adopt a Hwy, Siuslaw Chapter Surfrider Foundation signs @ mp. 176 Washburn State Park entrance and mp. 174 Ocean Beach Wayside Park on Hwy 101 between Florence and Yachats. This marks the beginning of our partnership with ODOT to keep this 2-mile stretch of the Oregon Coast State Hwy clean, and to help raise people's awareness that trash on the Hwy ends up up on the beach and eventually into the ocean.
