South Jersey Chapter Vice Chairman
We are actively looking for someone who is interested in taking a leadership role as the Vice Chairman of the South Jersey Chapter. The role should be of interest to someone that is planning on staying active in Surfrider on a local and national level. The individual should also have interest in being groomed for the future opportunity as Chairman of the chapter.
Responsibilities:
- Share the responsibility of overseeing the operation of the South Jersey Chapter with the Chairman
- Oversee the development of local campaigns
- Act as a liaison for the South Jersey Chapter to Surfrider National
- Serve as a chapter representative at city council meetings, press opportunities, etc...
- Oversee the executive committee and address issues among the members
Surfrider Captains are extremely important and help our Chapter address localized concerns and issues. The South Jersey Chapter should monitor all municipalities from Cape May to Brigantine. Surfrider Captains serve as the eyes and ears of the Executive Committee for their respective communities and surf breaks by monitoring local news and by keeping and eye out for illegal or irresponsible activities. Surfrider Captains bring issues that may otherwise go unnoticed to the Executive Committee’s attention so that our Chapter can address them and act accordingly.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor local news/gossip for issues that pertain to the Surfrider mission statement
- Serve as the ears and eyes of the SJSF chapter at their local beach or break
- Give 2-3 minute updates and/or volunteer opportunities at monthly general meetings or via e-mail to be presented at chapter meeting.
- Serve as Chapter representative at local annual beach clean-up for their community.
- Help recruit new members or interested parties in their community.
The Environmental Coordinator will oversee all environmental programs within the South Jersey Chapter. These may include water issues, community education programs, trash & recycling programs, waste stream management, source reduction, etc...
Responsibilities:
- to provide concerned citizens with the opportunity for hands-on involvement with an environmental problem solving effort
- to locate & define local and regional environmental concerns having to do with our rivers, bays and ocean
- to raise public awareness regarding environmental issues
- to use the data collected to bring polluters into compliance, and
- develop a model program that could influence national legislation and enforcement.
The legal consultant will help Surfrider South Jersey in regards to strategy and legal advice in planning campaigns, or in the event that we are forced into arbitration in pursuit of our mission statement.
Responsibilities:
- to provide advice on legal matters
- to ensure we operate in accordance with the law while pursuing campaigns
- to compose and/or proofread legal correspondence.
Events Liaison, Team Leader, and Table Captains — Many positions available!
Perhaps one of the most rewarding but also one of the easiest volunteer opportunities is staffing our event tables. Activism and Education are two very important elements of Surfrider’s mission. Our Chapter is invited to set up a table at dozens of events throughout the year. These tables give us an opportunity to interact with the public and educate them on current environmental issues facing our beaches and waves. A basic knowledge of our mission statement and a personable demeanor is all you need. You can volunteer for a three hour shift once a year, or as many as you would like. The more volunteers we have the more events we can attend.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and break down of display
- Distribute educational materials
- Answer questions or provide a means of follow-up to unanswered ones
- Inform the public on current environmental issues facing our coast
- Inform the public on upcoming Surfrider events
- Recruit new members
We’re a grassroots non-profit organization with a limited advertising budget. That means we need your help to promote our events and important issues. This is another volunteer opportunity that is very easy but extremely important. The time you put into it is up to you. It could entail placing one sign up at the local grocery store or flyers on the windshields of cars parked at a surf break. In addition, we may need assistance with other miscellaneous promotion projects, i.e. contacting a surf shop to see if they can mention our meeting in an upcoming mailing.

- Help promote events or create awareness by distributing flyers
- Assisting in miscellaneous promotion projects
Community Outreach Coordinator (Speaking/Education) — Several Positions available!
Having a presence at schools, community meetings, or for interested groups is very important to our Chapter. We need volunteers that are willing to articulate our mission. We also need people who are willing to visit schools and show Sea-to-Summit and answer questions.
Responsibilities:
- Represent our Chapter in a speaking capacity including reading position statements, taking notes, and leading classroom and community group discussions
- Present Sea to Summit to area schools
The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is Surfrider Foundation’s water quality monitoring, education and advocacy program. It is utilized by Chapters and members to alert citizens and officials in communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions. BWTF has demonstrated success by raising public awareness of coastal water pollution levels and precipitating the establishment of state and local government water quality monitoring programs in many communities.
BWTF was established with the following objectives:
- to provide concerned citizens with the opportunity for hands-on involvement with an environmental problem solving effort
- to gather coastal water samples on a regular basis to determine pollution patterns in the near shore environment
- to raise public awareness regarding the extent and severity of coastal water pollution
- to use the data collected to bring polluters into compliance
- to develop a model program that could influence national legislation and enforcement.
IT & Data Coordinator (Information/Data Collection)
Our Chapter needs help collecting information as well as researching issues. Help us be more productive by volunteering to work in this capacity.
