Obituary: Mike Boudreaux

Mike Boudreaux, 59 of Dana Point, died April 14, 2008. He is survived by 2 brothers, Steve, Bob; sister-in-laws, Wanda, Lin; nephew, Robert and niece, Valerie Boudreaux. In commemoration of Mike's life, the Boudreaux family graciously requests that donations be made the Newport Beach Chapter. Please indicate donation is being made in memory of Mike. We offer our condolences and gratitude to the Boudreauxs.

Army engineers criticize toll agency

In a strong rebuke by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the agency proposing a toll road through San Onofre State Beach has been accused of making false and misleading statements in an appeal to federal officials.

Col. Thomas H. Magness, the corps' district director in Los Angeles, charged in a letter last week that the appeal by Irvine-based Transportation Corridor Agencies challenging the project's denial by the state Coastal Commission contains false statements and mischaracterizes the Army's role in the planning process.

"I am compelled to highlight a few areas of the public record where I have found inaccurate statements as well as inferences that misrepresent the Corps' preliminary determinations," Magness wrote to the U.S. Department of Commerce, which will rule on the appeal.

Laguna Beach sewage spill closes highway, beaches

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. --Utility crews struggled Friday to repair a sewer line that leaked thousands of gallons of raw sewage into streets and the ocean, closing some of the city's scenic beaches and a mile of Pacific Coast Highway.

The main thoroughfare through the city remained closed for a mile Friday afternoon, 24 hours after a rusted clamp started to leak, said City Manager Ken Frank.

The pipe that transports sewage to a treatment plant sprayed raw sewage at the rate of 50 gallons per minute into the streets for 90 minutes Thursday, said Frank.

About 6,000 gallons of sewage flowed into the ocean at Agate Street, Frank said.
