Project Summary

The City of Laguna Beach is planning to remodel the beach access at Brooks Street. The Laguna Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and other citizen’s have had the opportunity to see the conceptual plans for the new beach access and we are very happy to say that we believe the City’s plans will improve both beach access and views without impacting the beach or surf.

The plan calls for removing the existing stairs and instead constructing a new set of stairs facing northwest -leading down to the rocks that many people already use to get to the top of the stairs. This approach will eliminate the drop off at the end of the existing stairs that occurs during times when the sand has drifted away.

The new design will take advantage of the natural rock ramp to facilitate access without a drop off regardless of the sand level.

In addition to this improvement, the access remodel will redesign the existing “bench bunker” to open up the area where the benches are and also create an area of "stadium seating" to the north that will have views of second reef.

We would like to applaud the City of Laguna Beach for this thoughtful design.

Next Steps

The next steps for this plan are to finalize the working plans, create the appropriate CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) documents that include public review, get approval from the Design Review Board and then begin construction. The City is hoping to meet an aggressive timeline that will allow them to begin construction this winter and complete the access by May 1st – before the summer south swell season begins.
