WHERE: Coastal Grays Harbor County, Washington State

WHAT: Community-based marine ecosystem stewardship initiative

STATE: Beginning at the mouth of the Chehalis River Basin, the Grays Harbor Estuary connects the second largest watershed in Washington to the Pacific Ocean. The area’s rich ecosystem includes one of the largest concentrations of migrating shorebirds on the west coast. Coastal communities rely on a healthy ecosystem to support the local economy through fishing, shellfish harvesting, seafood processing and tourism. In recent years, the region has suffered from declines in fisheries and intense flooding in the Chehalis Basin. Upstream logging, industry and agricultural practices, erosion, climate change and increasing development in the flood plain and on the shoreline are jeopardizing the health of the Grays Harbor ecosystem.

STRATEGY: to generate a shared vision for a healthy and thriving Grays Harbor marine ecosystem and pathways to achieve that vision.

GOAL: To understand, protect, and restore the marine and estuarine ecological processes of the Washington Coast in support of ecosystem health, sustainable resource-based livelihoods, cultural integrity, and coastal communities.

TACTICS:

  • Support development of a Grays Harbor County Marine Resources Committee. This local citizen’s group is designed to promote marine resource stewardship and restoration projects and programs based on sound science. The committee offers a valuable forum for stakeholders and managers to address marine resource issues, build community support for conservation priorities, and disseminate best available science for the region.
  • Strengthen Surfrider Foundation’s local grassroots influence through the South Coast Chapter.
  • Build a network of community members, activists, business and political leaders who care about the health of the coastal ecosystem.
  • Communicate regularly with this network to inform them about news, projects and activities related to coastal conservation issues through our Washington Pacific Coast Blog: http://surfriderwashingtonoutercoast.blogspot.com/
  • Participate in county management and policy processes in support of stronger protections for shorelines and other sensitive habitat areas.
