Urban Turtles?
Green sea turtles usually make their homes in tropical waters, however there is a group of "odd ball turtles" that have turned an area of the San Gabriel River (more than a mile upstream from the beach) into their regular stomping grounds. Scientists are stumped by the behavior of the seven turtles that have been discovered living in this 100-yard-wide river channel at the Los Angeles County-Orange County line. Green sea turtles are an endangered species and date back as far as 30 million years.

Check Out CLIF GreenNotes
Check out the GreenNotes program from our friends at CLIF. Though the program, CLIF helps emerging musicians become more environmentally friendly by helping them take on such actions as fueling their buses with bio diesel, printing on recycled paper using soy-based ink, selling organic cotton t-shirts at shows, working to provide locally and organically grown foods backstage, and buying renewable wind energy credits to offset their remaining carbon dioxide emissions. Highlighting this effort is the release of the GreenNotes album Protect the Places We Play, featuring music from artists such as Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Brett Dennen, Rogue Wave and more! Proceeds from the album will go to support Leave No Trace, Sierra Club, National Environmental Education Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation.

More Beach Closures For South Jersey
Labor Day weekend brought disappointment to many South Jersey beach goers when several of the local beaches were shut down due to medical waste contamination. The closures have been on again, off again for the past week and were kicked off by the discovery of 100 to 200 syringes found in the sand with gauze and other medical supplies. Officials believe that some of this pollution was deliberately placed and an investigation is under way.

Help Protect The Right Whale From Ship Strikes
The endangered north Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered mammal species in the world (there are only about 300 left) and they are particularly vulnerable to ship strikes in certain commercial routes due to their slow-moving nature. In attempt to protect the whales from fast-moving ships traveling through their feeding grounds in and around Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and inside the "calving grounds" off Jacksonville, Florida the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is proposing a 10-knot speed limit in these areas (along with a 20-mile area near mid-Atlantic ports where and when the whales are migrating). NOAA has opened up the public comment period on this issue until Sept. 29, 2008. Please contact them here to show your support for this right whale protection.

Multiple Polar Bears Discovered Swimming Dangerously Far From Alaska Coast
At least nine polar bears were discovered swimming in the open waters of Alaska’s Chukchi Sea this week (with one at least 60 miles from shore). World Wildlife Fund (WWF) polar bear experts say, "the bears could have difficulty making it safely to shore and risk drowning, particularly if a storm arises." The nine bears were discovered during a marine survey of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas (in advance of potential offshore oil development). Satellite images show an absence of sea ice in the area the polar bears were found and experts predict this year’s sea ice loss could meet or exceed the last year's record setting loss. More Info.

Speaker Pelosi Flips Her Stance On Offshore Drilling
On Saturday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proposed the expansion of offshore drilling as part of a new Democratic energy bill. The plan borrows from the "Gang of Ten's" plan. Pelosi's recent proposal is just another step away from the Democratic party's original anti-offshore oil drilling stance. Surfrider officially opposes any efforts to lift the offshore oil moratorium. More Info.

Town of Palm Beach Proposed Dredge & Fill
The Town of Palm Beach is currently seeking a permit from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) for the Reach 8 Dredge and Fill Project. Surfrider Foundation asserts that the proposed Reach 8 Project carries serious negative impacts, including:
* Degradation of near-shore and off-shore reefs
* The potential increase of shark attacks because of turbidity
* Harm to wildlife, including sea turtles and their nesting areas
* The degradation of surf spots, and fishing and diving areas
* The beach invasion of silty, fine or coarse, gray fill
