MISSION STATEMENT

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.

THE VENTURA CHAPTER

We recognize that all things are connected and everything we do impacts our coastline. To this end, for the past decade we have been working on integrated solutions to the problems that face our ocean, waves, and beaches.  These include Surfer's Point Managed Retreat, Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Project, Urban Renewal, and Watershed Restoration.  Visit our Chapter Campaigns page to learn more about this effort.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Surfrider booth at the Ventura Earth Day Expo, visited our Environmental Director's Ocean Friendly Garden on the Midtown Green Home Tour and participated in our Beach Cleanup (200 volunteer beach cleaners!)  We are excited and encouraged by how many of you want to do something about reducing urban runoff.  To help you learn more about our urban watershed initiatives and ideas, check out our poster "Solving the Urban Runoff Problem"(7MB) or the more detailed watershed document (3MB).  We also have a new poster illustrating some possible solutions for rehabilitating the Sanjon urban watershed (6MB).  The new Ocean Friendly Gardens page has been launched on this site, please check it out..  We love seeing you at these events and draw inspiration from your comments and concerns about the environment.  Thanks for your support!

April 1st Chapter Social : Biofoam Surfboard Presentation

Tuesday April 1, 2008: 6-8PM  Event flier
Ned McMahon was the featured speaker at our April 1, 2008 meeting.  Ned is the director of HomeBlown  US, the manufacturer of Biofoam.  Ned shared with us his passion for greening the surfboard industry.  It is well known that the manufacture of surfboards is environmentally damaging, but even “green” surfboards aren’t all that green.  Next time you get that magic stick, you need to know what you’re getting.  Where did it come from, how was it made, and most importantly who made it?  Ned stressed the importance of looking for sustainable materials like Biofoam cores, bamboo & silk deck cloth, low VOC resins and plywood stringers in making surfboards.  He also discussed the popularization of surfing which has led to an influx of boards made overseas…. mass produced and shipped thousands of miles by container ship.  He asked that we all look at purchasing from local shapers who make boards with a heart and soul craftsmanship you can’t buy from mass marketers.  When you purchase your next board, make a difference.  This event was covered by SoCal News.  Both Ned and our chapter chair John Wingate were interviewed following the presentation. To view the video follow this link.

Ventura River Watershed Reception, Feb. 28 2008    ( more photos....)

Guests of honor of the Ventura River Watershed reception were the members of the California Ocean Protection Council (COPC), who were in Ventura for their February meeting and a tour of local watershed projects.  The reception was a huge success bringing together more than 60 people representing roughly 10 government agencies and the same number on non-profit groups, all unified in their objective of healing the watershed and repairing decades of damage done to the ocean.  We would like to thank each and every attendee.   In order to effectively solve the problems we face in reaching our environmental objectives, we need to work together and share ideas and solutions.  Thanks also to J’s Tapas for the outstanding food, drink and hospitality  more...

Solving the Urban Runoff Problem - (Posted online - Feb 2008)
A Vision for the Urban Watershed - Ventura, California
This document outlines an integrated watershed approach to solving the urban runoff problem in a small coastal drainage within the City of Ventura. The city faces increased regulatory pressure for municipal stormwater, as well as increased water supply concerns as the city grows in the drought-prone southern California climate. The integrated approach described is intended to address these issues as well as provide a vision for implementing the city’s priority on protecting the beaches and natural surroundings as emphasized in the 2005 General Plan. Endangered Steelhead Swim Up Casitas’ Fish Ladder

Ojai Valley News - February 1, 2008
Recent rains have enticed endangered steelhead trout to make a spawning run up the Ventura River. On Thursday January 31, 2008 the first adult steelhead of the year was detected by new camera’s installed at Casitas’ Robles Fish Passage Facility, a fish ladder completed in December of 2004 to allow steelhead to swim upstream on the Ventura River.

"Tales of the Ventura River" video now online

Visit with the old-timers at Phil's Barber Shop as they reminisce about the "good old days" when the Ventura River ran free.

This video is long, but contains some interesting insight into the history of the watershed, and how water supply and flood control altered the historic runs of steelhead and the natural public trust assets that today, sadly, balance on the brink of extinction.

The video was produced by Robin Chilton several years ago, and has been playing in local cable Channel 6 in Ventura.

Surfrider Foundation - 64 Victories Since January 2006
The global network of the Surfrider Foundation has had 64 victories since January 2006. Here is a list of all 64, a map of the victories and here is a definition of "victory". Let me share background and logic behind this number....

Surfrider Foundation's CEO, Jim Moriarty, has his very own Blog to share his updates, comments, and thoughts about who we are and what we do here:

Surfers Point update
Mon Dec 10, 2007

On Friday, November 30, 2007, the Surfers' Point Working Group met to discuss the project status and schedule. Surfrider was represented by Larry Manson, Vince Kisch, and Paul Jenkin.

restoration.html

The 70% Design is complete, with Final Design to be completed within 6 weeks (Feb 2008). An updated estimate now places total construction costs at $8.1M. Increases are result of general inflation in construction costs.

A significant portion of the cost is cobble to rebuild and protect the shoreline. A cobble source has been found from a County Flood Control project, but sorting and transportation is costly. A discussion identified approximately $1M in possible cost-cutting measures by leaving abandoned pipes in place, reducing landscaping
costs, and limiting grass-pave to high use areas. General consensus was that these should be included in the final plans, although preference was to find full funding.

The coastal consultant is working on a beach management plan, including “trigger points” for future renourishment as required by the Coastal Commission. The final MOU with Fairgrounds and City needs ratification.

Funding is going to be the big hurdle for this project. The City of Ventura has a federal transportation grant of $1.5M for the bike path that needs to be used in the next 2 years. Other grant applications have not been successful. The Ocean Protection Council OPC will be meeting in Ventura on February 28, and this will provide an opportunity for field tour of Surfers’ Point as well as Matilija Dam

Ventura Wastewater policies scrutinized

Dec 18, 2007

Last week the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) heard comments on a proposal to slowly phase out the discharge of treated sewage into the Santa Clara River estuary. According to Heal the Bay, the Board is backing down from their initial recommendation that the discharge should be reduced by 1 million gallons per day each year...

Saving the dammed - Ventura County Reporter
Since its construction in 1947, the Matilija Dam has blocked the passage of spawning salmon up the Ventura River, interfering with the Ojai Valley ecosystem.

Beachscape
The Ventura Chapter has done extensive coastal mapping with a goal of creating a detailed dataset of the Chapter's coastline. Volunteers were assigned blocks of shoreline areas and filled out a Beach Characterization Form for each area, filling out details such as beach access, outfalls, surf areas, erosion hotspots, natural areas, etc. The Chapter covered Rincon to Port Hueneme.
