Georgia Pacific Pulp Mill Permit

Campaign objective is to advocate for a stronger NPDES permit for the Georgia Pacific Pulp and Papter Mill in Toledo, Oregon. The mill discharges 11 million gallons of wastewater a day within the nearshore of Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon. The current permit as proposed by the Dept of Environmental Quality is inadequate in the following areas a) failure to require appropriate monitoring b) increases size of mixing zone c) lack of public disclosure re: landfill leachate from Marion County. Local advocacy lead to the reconsideration of the permit under new requirements for a) eliminating external wastestreams such as landfill leachate, b) performing a seasonal aquatic survey. Further local advocacy has let to a second monitoring effort through the City of Newport from license dollars acquired for the right of way of the pipeline.
