Maui Bans Plastic Bags

Victory | January 31 2011

Plastic Pollution

Maui was the first county in Hawaii to ban single-use plastic bags in 2008, and the law went into effect in Jan. 2011. Surfrider's Maui Chapter supported the bill and was part of the coalition to help pass it into law. Following its lead, the Kauai Chapter began working with other groups to pass the bag second bag ban in the state. Although there was some complaining after the law went into effect in 2011, folks on Maui have seen how much cleaner the island is and there is now broad support for the ban.

Plastic Pollution

Rise Above Plastics is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics.
