Polystyrene Ban & Utensils Only Upon Request in Los Angeles!

Surfrider LA and Surfrider South Bay chapters are encouraging the Los Angeles City Council to pass ordinances requiring restaurants stop using polystyrene containers and to provide utensils to-go only upon request.

The City of Los Angeles has an enormous opportunity to address a major source of pollution in our communities, waterways, and coastlines by adopting a citywide Polystyrene Ban Ordinance along with a Plastic Utensils Upon Request Ordinance. With an estimated 10 million metric tons of plastic entering our ocean annually, the global plastic pollution pandemic is not something we can clean ourselves out of.

The solutions lie in source reduction and consumer awareness which both proposed ordinances directly target. Given the City of Los Angeles’ ambitious waste management goals, we need to take bold steps to curb our single-use plastic consumption while encouraging businesses and consumers to adopt habits that support healthy communities and a clean environment.
