Save the North Shore
Support short- and longterm solutions to preserve North Shore Oahu's coastline and sandy beaches.
The North Shore of Oahu supports thriving communities, amazing coastal ecosystems, and is home to some of the most famous surf breaks in the world, including Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Like many sandy shorelines in Hawaii, however, the North Shore is threatened by chronic coastal erosion that is exacerbated by sea level rise, increased storm events, and larger annual King Tides. Compounding the situation is the fact that natural sand dunes and sand banks are now covered by homes and public infrastructure like roads. Recent studies further warn that, without longterm management plans, 40% of Oahu’s beaches could disappear over the next 30 years.
To help address the chronic erosion impacting the North Shore of Oahu, Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter is working with local community members, state agencies, academia and other stakeholders to plan for short term and long-term erosion solutions at the the North Shore. Our actions focus on a holistic, community-based approach that includes policy, stakeholder input, science communication, and community engagement. We must act now to maintain our communities, ecosystems, and recreation.
