Support AB 67 (Petrie-Norris) - The Sea Level Rise Preparedness Act

This bill was held on May 5, 2021 by California Appropriations Committee.

The coming decade represents a pivotal time for the State – and our coastal communities – to act in order to prepare for sea level rise before more extreme and more expensive solutions are needed along the coast.

The purpose of AB 67  is to expedite and support sea-level rise preparedness efforts across the state by requiring state agencies to conduct a sea-level rise analysis before approving public funds for new or expanded infrastructure projects along the coast. Through a coordinated and informed approach, California can make these funds available for short-term maintenance and long-term adaptation projects, and prevent the irresponsible use of public funds on projects that will be impacted by sea level rise during the life of that project and otherwise divert public funds that could be used for long-range planning and adaptation projects.

This bill additionally builds from existing statewide policies and objectives to provide the tools needed for state and local governments to conduct an economic analysis related to sea level rise, by tasking an interagency Working Group to coordinate long-range sea level rise planning across state agency permits and programs, and to critically create a methodology for sea level rise economic analysis to reduce the time and burden of conducting this analysis on individual agencies and departments.
