Cloud Systems and Network Administrator

Location: San Clemente, California area preferred; Remote locations will be considered.

The Cloud Systems and Network Administrator is part of a small tech team that services 65 employees and 80 volunteer-led chapters throughout the US and Canada. 

We are looking for a dynamic and service-oriented individual to join us in this Network Administrator Role. This position will own our internal network infrastructure, network support function and assist with ongoing security and compliance activities. The position is hands-on but broad reaching. If you are scrappy and no work is too small for you, yet you can think big and support the infrastructure for our team as we scale, this job is for you. Identifies solutions and provides project leadership in order to provide a high level of service to our staff and chapter network.

This position is a ‘many hats’ sort of job, but the primary responsibility is as a cloud systems administrator. This role is responsible for our cloud infrastructure, providing help desk support, and helping administer our Google Workspace. This position reports to and works alongside the Technology Manager to provide solutions to our staff’s and chapters’ challenges.The Cloud Systems and Network Administrator  will contribute to the overall success of the Foundation across the organization and plays a key role to fulfilling our mission. The cloud systems and network administrator is responsible for deploying, configuring, and maintaining servers that host over 80 websites. This includes performing regular backups of filesystems and databases, and restoring as needed. The ideal candidate should look at common issues and friction points as an opportunity to improve our tools for our users. The cloud administrator is also responsible for proposing and implementing enhancements to our infrastructure and documenting changes.This position also helps provide general IT advice and training to our users on our tools, security, and best practices.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Network design, implementation, and maintenance. Upgrades networks by coordinating with vendors; developing, testing, evaluating, and installing enhancements.
  • Support 24x7 operations environment (ability to support off-hours, weekends, and holidays as needed).
  • Identify opportunities for automation and assist with the development of automation systems to address those opportunities.
  • Participation with research, planning, scoping, implementation and ongoing support for projects.
  • Creates and maintains detailed and complete network documentation.
  • Utilize ticket tracking system to document all support incidents.
  • Assist with system monitoring, reviewing logs, and verifying completion of scheduled tasks.
  • Participation with maintaining inventory of hardware, software and support assets.

  • Strong communication and problem solving skills
  • At least 4+ years (or relative) experience in a Systems or Desktop support role where you learned the ins and outs of IT Administration
  • Demonstrate knowledge of TCP/IP Networking, Cable Management, Routing and Switching
  • Experience with WAN/LAN, Firewalls, Arista switches and Wireless Access Points
  • Experience with SD-WAN a plus
  • Pursuing entry level certifications, e.g. Network+, Security+, CCNA, etc
  • A strong desire to work with new technology and tools
  • Capability to self-motivate, work independently and taking ownership of job responsibilities with minimal oversight.
  • On-point, genuine interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated Customer Service & Troubleshooting skill sets.
  • The ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects and remain calm under pressure.
  • Experience working with multi-tiered ticket handling/resolution systems.
  • Experience working with vendors to implement network upgrades and resolve issues.

 This is a full-time position. The C Systems and Network Administrator position will be compensated with a competitive salary commensurate with candidate’s experience level, starting at $60,000+. The Surfrider Foundation offers a salary that is competitive with other national, not-for-profit conservation organizations.
