PACIFIC RIM CHAPTER BEACH CLEAN COORDINATOR (Surfrider Foundation Canada)

The Surfrider Foundation (SF) is an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches for all people through a powerful activist network. 

The Surfrider Foundation Canada Pacific Rim Chapter is looking for an energetic full-time (35 hours/week) Beach Clean Coordinator. Surfrider Foundation is a world-renowned ocean and coastal conservation organisation, cultivating environmental leaders among staff and volunteers, providing training, professional and travel opportunities.

Selected responsibilities are primarily to support the Love Your Beach Clean program operations, including the delivery of the beach clean schedule. Our ideal candidate is a motivated team player, with an enthusiasm for coastal conservation and a commitment to social and environmental justice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Support all elements of LYBC coordination, administration, and execution of cleanups.
  • Maintenance of beach clean equipment and materials.
  • Lead and promote the #5minutebeachclean initiative.
  • Promote the Marine Debris Tracker app, working to increase engagement with the app.
  • Develop educational resources about cleanups, including posters, presentations, brochures, etc.
  • Work with the Youth Coordinator to facilitate educational beach cleans as part of the Youth Environmental Stewardship program.
  • Work with Ocean Legacy to coordinate debris end of life and processing at the Ocean Plastic Depot.
  • Liaise with partners and solidify clean up collaborations.
  • Sustain and develop local partnerships and economy for zero waste catering, transportation, waste disposal.
  • Meet with campaign committees to ensure beach clean data is being leveraged towards initiative and policy work
  • Provide the media committee content about beach cleans - including data, photos, and anecdotes for storytelling.

Administration

  • Gain permissions and permits from First Nations, BC Parks, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Districts and partner organisations.
  • Ensure insurance requirements are met via our internal Event Approval Process
  • Collect and input beach clean data, maintain a database for campaign and legislative resources (debris, locations), and report data through various channels to advocate for policy change.

Volunteer Recruitment, Development, Retainment, Engagement

Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to:

  • Support recruitment of new beach clean volunteers.
  • Ensure all beach events are fully staffed
  • Ensure volunteers are fully trained and have access to ongoing support and information.
  • Coordinate volunteer appreciation and retainment activities. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners.
  • Ability to prioritise and demonstrate flexibility when handling multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organisational and communication skills, including writing skills.
  • Administrative experience (Google Suite, Excel, Canva).
  • Knowledge and understanding of ocean and environmental justice issues, particularly those local to the Pacific Rim Chapter and BC at large.
  • Passionate about ocean and coastal protection.
  • Event coordination experience.
  • Volunteer coordination is a plus. 
  • Social media experience is a plus.
  • Personal transport is a plus.
  • Flexible schedule; available for some weeknight meetings and some weekend events.

LOCATION:  

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based in Tofino, British Columbia. The candidate will work primarily in the Surfrider Pacific Rim office located in Tofino, and facilitate shoreline cleanup events across the Pacific Rim area. This is not a remote position.


REPORTS TO:  Washington/Canada Regional Manager

SALARY & BENEFITS:  

This position starts at $20 CAD/hour, depending upon experience and qualifications.
