Activist Spotlight: Eugenia Ermacora With the Los Angeles Chapter

Q: Please give us a brief introduction about yourself.

Hola! My name is Eugenia Ermacora. I’m originally from Gualeguaychú, Entre Rios, Argentina. For more than a decade, I have been calling Los Angeles my home. The ocean is and has always been my happy place. Several years ago, a combination of personal experiences started me on an amazing and interesting journey to find a way to better understand how mass production, supply chain, consumption, biodiversity, human behavior and the interconnections of cultures work in relationship to our environment. My need to understand the unnecessary, greedy actions directly hurting our home, my happy place and the health of all living things has become my passion. It is the very reason why I have decided to study sustainability, change my personal habits, and for the last three years, dedicate my free time to volunteer with the LA Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Through this experience, I have been able to contribute my little grain of sand to the sustainability movement.

Spanish translation:

¡Hola!

Q: What is your current job or role in your local chapter?

There are a couple of different roles that I have decided to take on in the LA Chapter:

  • For the last two years, I have been one of the Co-Chairs of the Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) program
  • I participate in the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) team on behalf of my local chapter, as well as the national team.
  • I was also one of the organizers of the first Spanish speaking One Watershed (OWS) event in September. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, on Saturday, September 11th, we partnered with “Courage Camps,” Aqua Surf,” and “Black Surfers Collective.”

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the food and restaurant industry, increasing the use of single-use plastic and other wasteful tactics. My amazing team and I are working to encourage Los Angeles restaurants to return to and adopt more sustainable practices in their business operations. This year, we have gathered a team to empower and inspire restaurants to reduce their single-use plastic by following the new Ocean Friendly Restaurants program criteria. Also, we are taking advantage of the recently passed “Skip the Stuff” bill in the Los Angeles area.

Q: Why and when did you get involved with the Surfrider Foundation?

In January 2018, after spending a few years in Florida, I moved back to LA and found myself at the place of a friend, Michelle Katz, who was immersed in the food container research for OFR. I was blown away by her findings about bioplastics, single-use plastic, the recycling problems society faces, and the lack of education driving usage of non-environmentally friendly materials by the restaurant industry.

At the time, I just started surfing and noticed Michelle's findings first-hand. I recalled picking up trash while diving the reefs off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale and it all started to connect for me. Given my background of working in the restaurant industry when I first moved to the U.S., all of this insight and new information really hit home. I was touched at a deep level and it was then when I made the decision to go from an observer / passive doer to an activist. That same month, I attended my first local Surfrider LA chapter meeting. I have been volunteering in beach cleanups, OFR, OWS, JEDI and other events and programs ever since.

Q: Has your experience as someone from the Latinx / Hispanic community framed your perspective as an activist and as part of the Surfrider network? And if so, how?

Definitely. My hometown in Argentina has had a tremendous influence on my environmental activism and Surfrider has taken it to the next level.

As a little girl growing up in Argentina, where the culture of sustainability was not even a thing back then, I never imagined that I would be involved and so passionate about this work. Years ago, I witnessed the birth of the environmental movement in my hometown when concerned citizens expressed their objections to the installation of cellulose factories by the international river of Uruguay (bordering my town). The power of community engagement was reinforced by their actions to prevent the use of pesticides in soy agriculture. I was inspired to learn what a community can do when people come together.

It is because of powerful and inspirational Latinas in our LA community, spearheading Stand LA, Reusable LA, Courage Camps, just to name of few, that I am not only passionate about sustainability, but also involved first-hand in provoking change that improves our environment.

I see this passion and commitment with all the Surfrider members and allies with whom I have had the pleasure of interacting in this community. I feel honored and proud to continue to stand with the Surfrider Foundation in this movement.

Spanish translation,

Definitivamente.

Q: What are some local issues that are affecting your ocean, waves and beaches?

The Los Angeles area is affected by numerous environmental issues that impact our communities and the ocean. Some of the ongoing issues I see are inequality, plastic waste, water pollution in our watershed runoffs, oil and gas drilling in urban areas, beach erosion in the Malibu Lagoon, and beach access, among others.

One of the more recent issues the local communities were impacted by and saw first-hand was is the dumping of partially-treated and raw sewage by the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant into the Santa Monica Bay. Not only does this affect the water quality of all local beach areas, but summer is when most Angelinos enjoy going to the beach with friends and family. The potential exposure to the contaminated waters is therefore so much greater.

Another big issue we are currently seeing is the increased demand of single-use plastic due to COVID. In 2020, single-use plastic waste in LA increased by 20%. OFR is taking a strong position on this issue, adopting new criteria that promotes reusables for dining in and to-go orders.

Q: What Surfrider projects have you worked on?

Before becoming the Co-Chair of OFR, I organized and coordinated social gatherings and events at our OFR restaurants. I created monthly social get-togethers for our community and every event was purposely planned and executed. Some events were small and the purpose was to bring our team together to promote the businesses during slow days, and to advertise and support a particular campaign that the chapter might have been working on at the time.

We raised money with art auctions, raffles and even organized a sustainable Halloween costume party. Bringing people together, connecting those who share the same passion and making sure everyone gets a little joy while coming together for our common mission of protecting what we love, has been an extremely rewarding role for me.

This year, I have been working on a project with my friend Joanna and we are now able to make it happen. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, we brought together “One Watershed” for the Latinx Spanish-speaking community in collaboration with Courage Camps. This was a fun family beach day event with surf lessons, provided by Aqua Surf, and stories about Nick Gabaldon, presented by Black Surfers Collective. More than 25 Latinx children, ages 4 to 14,  participated in the event.

Q: What has been the highlight of your Surfrider experience (i.e., campaign, program, victory)?

Without a doubt, the highlights are the friends I have made in Surfrider. Every single person I meet through Surfrider is a constant inspiration in my life. The LA Chapter has become my Surfrider family. We work, we support a variety of causes and we encourage each other in every step of the way.

When I first started, Graham Hamilton with the LA Chapter set the tone and the team followed his amazing lead. We cannot make an impact in this community on our own. We need to collaborate to tackle the climate crisis now, more than ever.

Q: What's been your experience being a surfer and/or ocean enthusiast as someone from the Latinx/Hispanic community?

I love being in the ocean and surfing, diving, paddleboarding and swimming. I have been very fortunate to find an amazing group of like-minded people with whom I share waves.

I’m aware of some uncomfortable situations related to localism and racism happening in the water and I do not condone that type of behavior. I would not tolerate anyone around me having that kind of attitude.

I have a strong accent from growing up in Argentina, and it has led to some interesting experiences. I’m extremely proud of my roots and I embrace being an immigrant who knows what it takes to survive, adapt and respect the community and the land that I call home. Every single one of these experiences has shaped me into the person and leader I am today.

The water and the ocean connect us all, surfers and non-surfers, as well as people from all over the world, regardless of their native language or their background. I try to be mindful of this and practice gratitude when I’m in the water. That type of mindset translates when communicating with the ones around me by being kind and friendly.

Q: What is the most important thing you tell others about Surfrider?

I usually talk about the amazing community I’m honored to be part of and about the incredible job Surfrider does at local, national and international levels.

I’m also super proud of the “Break Free from Plastic Act” bill and I hope everyone can help us get it reintroduced in the Senate in 2021.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share with our network about your journey?

As I mentioned before, I am an immigrant, bilingual and bicultural. My Latinx roots are very important in my life, and I’m super happy I get to contribute to this organization through this particular lens.
