In October of 2021, an oil spill was detected off the coast of Huntington Beach, California, prompting local individuals and businesses to spring to action to support response efforts. Cali Vibes Festival, an upcoming festival to be held in Long Beach, California, was among Surfrider's partners who extended support to our organization designated to furthering our work opposing offshore oil drilling, to help prevent spills like the Orange County one from happening again along California's treasured coast and elsewhere around the United States.
California Vibrations, or Cali Vibes, is a three day festival that will take place at Marina Green Park in Long Beach, CA from February 4-6, 2022, with a portion of proceeds from ticket sales directly benefiting Surfrider's mission. As a coastal music festival featuring acts that include professional surfers and activists, Cali Vibes' contribution will be focused specifically toward Surfrider's continued response to the OC Oil Spill, and ending new offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters once and for all. While officials have now declared the Orange County Oil Spill concluded, with Cali Vibes' support, Surfrider's work continues to:
- Ensure that the polluters are held accountable, and that environmental restoration opportunities are maximized.
- Advocate for the safe and responsible decommissioning of existing oil rigs off California's coast.
- Ban new offshore oil drilling throughout U.S. waters.
Coastal recreationists and beach users can continue to help Surfrider track tarballs that wash ashore through our tarball reporting app. Although organized cleanup efforts have concluded, the data collected by Surfrider's network using this app is important in helping to detect any cleanup needs that may resurface over time.
