Surfrider Foundation Response to Capitol Siege

The Surfrider Foundation condemns the violent acts of domestic terrorism that took place at the U.S. Capitol, which were designed to interfere with a free and fair election.

It is incumbent on our leaders at all levels of government and civil society to promote the truth  and enable the mutual respect needed to resolve our differences, and not fan the flames of baseless information and conspiracies. The consequences of the latter are destructive to our Republic and were made obvious yesterday with tragic consequences.

Our democratic systems are fundamental for a government that is for and by all people. The Surfrider Foundation, like all public advocacy organizations, relies on orderly and functioning decision making systems, from federal elections to local city council meetings, to ensure the essential role of the public in conservation.

There is much work to be done to protect our ocean, waves, beaches, and planet from serious threats including climate change, plastic and water pollution. The democratic process is how we will continue to work together to reach our common goals—fair, equitable and just coastal and ocean conservation. Our collective future depends on it.
